Wednesday, August 10, 2016 Backyard bird watching with Harry: by Harry Johnson The August Bird of the Month: Tree swallows Do you hear that chittering song and wonder where it is coming from? Look high and see if you have tree swallows soaring overhead, or sitting up high, singing to a mate. Every spring, the tree swallows return to our place and we love listening to their chits and clicks and songs. The tree swallow song is one of happiness and always brings a smile to my face. They love the nesting boxes we have around our place and spend many days entertaining us with their comings and going with sticks and feathers as they build their nest for the year. They are great mosquito catchers and we are always happy to have them get their fill at our place! Description: Male: Upper-parts are iridescent blue, under-parts are a bright white. The upper iridescent blue may appear green in some cases. They have a small bill and its wings when folded do not project beyond a short forked tail. Female: Similar to the male only duller. Immature: Gray brown with a white belly and grayish breast band. Nesting: Tree swallows nest in a natural cavity, old woodpecker hole or nest box. Their nest is made of weeds, grass, rootlets and other plant material lined with fine grass, feathers and sometimes pine needles. Fed by the male, the female incubates 4-7 white eggs for 14-15 days. The young fledge for 18-22 days. They have only one brood per year. Recommended nest box: Any bluebird style nest box with a 1 ½ inch or 1 nine- sixteenth inch entrance hole, placed 5-10 feet above the ground on a pole. Feeding: They look like small hawks flying around for insects, especially mosquitoes. They will fly low over land or water looking for insects. They require insects in the spring during brooding season, but unlike other swallows, they can subsist for extended periods of time on seeds and berries before the fall migration south. Habitat: They love and spend most of their time in open areas. Usually near woods and water, including urban lawns. Other interesting facts: The tree swallow is the first swallow species to return each spring. It is attracted to your yard with a nesting box and/or long ponds, lakes and agricultural fields. It will compete with the western bluebird for cavities and nest boxes. It travels great distances to find dropped feathers to line the nest. They can be little thieves; you can see them chasing other swallows for the feathers that are in their mouths. They gather in large flocks to migrate in the fall to Mexico and Central America. (Luke 12:32-40, Thessalonians 5:3-8) The master is off to a wedding banquet. His servants are home at the family farm. Some are alert, ready for his return; but some aren’t ready. All the same, the countdown has begun. No one knows exactly when the master will return. Jesus warned his disciples about the importance of being ready and he warns us of the same thing today. And at the end of our story, Jesus states this command, “You ... must be ready, ... for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour” (Luke 12:40). The tragedy today is that so many people will be unprepared when He arrives. And not only will they be unprepared, they will actually be deceived. Paul describes this in Thessalonians 5:3-5 where he says: “When they say, ‘There is peace and security,’ then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness.” We have to live daily with an “Attitude of Watchfulness.” Paul goes on to warn us in Thessalonians 5:6-7: “So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep; sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night.” Just as a soldier is commanded to “Stay alert while on the post,” we as Christians have to do the same thing. Paul tells us to watch: to stay awake; to be vigilant. This command means that we have to continually be prepared. If we’re truly ready we’ll have God’s heart: a heart full of love and a yearning to serve others. The Scriptures are clear, if you want to be great in the Kingdom of God you should be a servant to all. Jesus said: “I came to serve, not to be served.” If we’re always ready, we’ll look for Christ’s Coming with excitement and with expectancy. Are you ready? Community Bible Church What does a pastor do? 1 Peter 5:2-3 (NKJV) 2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; 3 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; I was once talking with some people when one of them asked me, “What do you do as a preacher?” They continued in all sincerity, “You only work one hour of the week. What do you do the rest of the time?” I was surprised by the question at the time, but I suppose it must be hard for someone who has no association with a church or a pastor to imagine what could fill up our days. In other churches my work has not been as broad and varied as it has been here in Cave Junction. In the past at other churches I did many things: I conducted some of the business affairs of the church, I was a pastor to single people, a children’s pastor, a pastor of counseling, a pastor to the young married (which was my favorite position), an administrator of a large facility, a liaison between Christian schools and the churches that hosted them. I’ve done radio programs, written articles for the paper, written messages, spent time in prayer, and repaired the church building. I have done Bible studies, men’s groups, classes on marriage, classes on raising children, and classes on personal finances. I have helped organize mission trips, and have gone on mission trips. One time I filmed a crusade in Guatemala. As an intern pastor, I cleaned and maintained the building, and did the yard work for the church. Other things come to mind, but most of these things that I have shared here have been external things. There are things people don’t see as often such as grief over those who are sick and unhappy – sadness for those who are damaged, deserted, and disenfranchised – prayer and counseling for those who struggle with any of the multitude of problems life brings our way. When the phone rings late at night or early in the morning, I always dread answering it – wondering who is sick, or hurt, or struggling, or who has died. Ultimately the ministry is people – they are what are important in God’s eyes – they are also the most difficult part of ministry. The hopes and desires of a pastor for people are great and very often dashed, but there are there are those whose lives encourage pastors. Those that go on in the faith – those broken lives that are made whole – the absolute joy of seeing people come to know that God is real and living and can be powerful in their lives – the blessing of seeing people come to eternal life in Christ Jesus. Nothing is better or worth more. I guess the best way to find out what a pastor does is to come to church, and I hope you do.
