(Photo courtesy of Kelli Augustadt for The Illinois Valley News) Hoopsters struggle, look to rebound as season moves on By Jenna Larkin IVN Contributing Writer Despite a lack of wins this past week for the IVHS basketball teams, the coaches are not disappointed. Instead, they are looking at the games as learning experiences for the young athletes. For the Lady Cougars, the holiday break brought about a little rust that had to be shaken off. “There were some girls gone over the break, so our team was not at full capacity this week,” said head coach Serena Barry. The girls played a hard-fought game Jan. 6 against Douglas at home. The Trojans, though, were one step ahead of IVHS throughout the game. At one point in the third quarter, the Cougars were only down by eight points, but soon lost their momentum. The Trojans won with a final score of 43-32. Coach Barry gives credit to the Douglas team for their discipline and well-run plays. Barry also gave credit to her girls for not giving up and fighting until the end. Instead of throwing in the towel, the girls were able to close a large point gap and finish strong. In coach Barry’s eyes, that is a great lesson learned. The Cougars came back strong when they traveled to Lakeview Friday, Jan. 9. “It was a close and physical game,” said Barry. The Lady Cougars were able to hold the Honkers in the first quarter to a 9-9 tie. Leading into the third quarter IVHS was down by nine points, but were soon able to fill that gap with some cunning team work. Allison Primeau led the Cougars with 11 points. Alex LaFlamme also helped the Cougars with nine points, while Avery Neville put up seven. Aundrea Miller also had a good game, scoring five points for the Cougars. “This was a confidence booster for the girls,” Barry said. “The girls know that they can win.” Barry sees the girls growing with each practice and game, gaining knowledge and experience. Barry also noted that with each game the girls work harder and the team chemistry is getting better. The Lady Cougars are scheduled to host Rogue River this Friday, Jan. 16. As the boys struggle to gain more wins this season, head coach Matt Knight feels that the game against Douglas was their best defensive effort to date. “It was a close game, back and forth,” said Knight. The IVHS offense was also humming at times. Sophmore Andrew Sherier and senior Nick Worley each put 13 points on the board. Worley also had 11 rebounds. With both teams battling over the ball, Douglas managed to pull ahead and take the game by a final score of 55-40. Despite the team’s fifth straight loss against the Lakeview Honkers this past Friday, coach Knight was once again pleased with the defensive effort. According to coach Knight, the boys are helping each other more and are in the right spots on the court when it matters. The boys are also improving on rotation and rebounding. Knight gave special credit to Conrad Davis and Nick Worley for the tremendous improvements they are each making. In the beginning of the season, both boys were slow to learn their positions and struggled to guard against opposing teams. As the season has progressed, Davis and Worley have started to shine. Davis scored 10 points and had 15 rebounds during the Lakeview game, while Worley scored 12 points during the same game. “Both are realizing that the harder they work, the better we do as well,” Knight said. As a whole, though, the team is struggling offensively. According to Knight, they need to improve on moving the ball around more and communication. With almost a week before their next game, Knight sees plenty of time to work some kinks out and get prepared for their game against Rogue River this Friday, Jan. 16. While the team struggles to gain wins this season, they have also suffered a big blow. Two of their main players, CJ Manning and Triston Hostkoetter, are out for the rest of the season due to knee injuries. Although there are still seven strong players, Knight has brought up two J.V. players to help out during tough times in games. This week Knight plans on taking the extra practice time and really preparing the J.V. players for upcoming games.
