Page A-2 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, Ore. Wednesday, January 14, 2015 Illinois Valley Gardening News: Kathy Lombardo The mild, wet fall weather was great for late summer-planted vegetables, such as lettuce, carrots, cabbage, kale, chard and Brussels sprouts. It is amazing how much food we can grow in our yards. Merely a few weeks into winter and it is time to salvage that produce before it “tips out” as a past Illinois Valley Garden Club member would say. These cold, dry and sunny days are perfect for prun- ing trees and shrubs. Fruit trees should have dead wood cut out first, then back up, and look for branches that cross over or are too crowded and remove those. Fire-wise thinning around the home can be done now for a safer summer in 2015. The Illinois Valley is special in its “tucked in between” mountain position, where the coastal fog pours over into the Valley like a quilt batt slides off the sewing table, and where on a cold sunny day here, the mountains east and south are getting snow. January is time to appreciate the forest, washed of its summer dust and the delicate beauty of the forest in snow. The first blooms of the year are Silktas- sel. Garrya elliptica is a native shrub which can be found at the Rough and Ready Botani- cal Wayside. Cultivars of garrya are available with more flamboyant blooms. They are Gar- rya “Evie” and G.’James Roof. The flowers are catkins and the shrub is either male or female with the male flowers more lovely. Oriental Hellebores and Lenten Rose do very well in our climate and are blooming now. On the coldest mornings, the leaves of camellia and rhododendron bushes may be curled under and drooping down. This is a type of temperature sensitive leaf movement called “thermotropic”. Another way to enjoy trees in winter is the ancient art of Bonsai. Tim Early will be pre- senting a lesson on Bonsai at the Illinois Valley Garden Club, Jan. 16. See “Save the Date” for information. Keep your chimney clean: Keeping chimneys clean is a key step in preventing chimney fires. If you don’t use your fireplace or wood stove very often, or you just moved, you might not know whether your chimney is clean or not. The following signs indicate a chimney in need of a cleaning: Burned wood odors coming from the fireplace when it's not being used. Fires that seem to burn poorly or that dump a bunch of smoke into the room. A black damper. Since it sits right above the firebox, the damper is often the easiest thing to see and reach and it gets caked with creosote. Look or reach inside, and see what you can find. If you see black gunk or you can pull out chunks of the stuff, there's a good amount of creosote built up inside. How often you need to clean your chimney depends a great deal on how much you use it. The kinds of fires you build and the type of wood you use also govern frequency. As a rule of thumb, it's a good idea to have chimneys cleaned at least once a year.
