Rayden Mundt 2nd place Peewee Cougars knocked out of playoffs in first round loss By Jenna Larkin IVN Contributing Writer The Cougars football squad traveled roughly nine hours to Eastern Oregon Nov. 9 to take on the Nyssa Bulldogs during round one of the State’s 3-A playoffs. Unfortunately, the Cou- gars lost 10-48. This was the fourth playoff appearance in IVHS history, the most resent being in 2010, when the Cougars lost to Santiam Christians in the second round. “The season was a success overall,” said head coach Ray Yarbrough. “We transitioned from being a more pass-oriented team into being a run-oriented team.” Although the team did not achieve all of their pre-season goals, they did however accomplish the biggest one, making it to the playoffs. That, to Yarbrough, makes this season a histori- cal one, especially with James Thompson smashing the school’s single season rushing record. The team also surpassed the 2,000- yard rushing mark. Ending a season with 1,000 yards is consid- ered the benchmark. Even though Thompson’s name will go in the record books by itlsef, Yarbrough feels that it is really a team record. Arts Red Garter Where the Valley comes to play “Without the offensive line blocking and the passing game being dangerous, the record would not have happened,” said Yarbrough. Overall, the team achieved many league awards, with sev- eral players being recognized for their outstanding dedication during the season.
