Page A-2 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, Ore. Wednesday, November 13, 2013 Life in the Valley of Riches By DAN MANCUSO, Publisher Personal responsibility and respect of others seems to have been lost. Now, in a time with little law enforcement around, we as a community should band together and look out for each other. Even if we sometimes don’t like each other. We are a community and it’s time we start acting like one. Now, before you say, “Hey, that’s not me,” that may be true. But even if you are not part of the problem, you could become part of the solution. It has been a long time since I have struck someone out of anger. I like to think that I practice pacifism. I call it practice because it’s something that is a work in progress that few, if any of us, will ever achieve fully. While I love a good verbal debate, I really can’t think of something that would make me want to hurt someone physically. With the recent incidents that took three lives from our community, many of us are still shell shocked. The Oregon State Police spent a lot of hours here this past weekend and if things pan out, they will have caught the heinous people that perpe- trated these crimes. Like them or not, the three men taken from us were peo- ple just like you and I. They had families and friends that loved them. A very insightful man once said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” We Valley residents need to step up and take back control of our community and we can do that one good deed at a time. For those who may be prone to look for revenge the very same man, Mahatma Gandhi, had this to say, “An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.” Have a great week and thank you for picking up this week’s paper, enjoy! ~djm Letters to the Editor writers) Illinois Valley News welcomes Let- ters to the Editor.
