Continued from A-1 City Councilor Margaret Miller said, “The council and the city have lost a good man with the passing of Dan Fiske. He served the council wisely and was a mentor to all; not only in his service to the city, but also the Boy Scouts and in his profession as a veterinarian. He will be deeply missed.” Boy Scout leader Jim Fuller also expressed deep sorrow at losing both Phillips and Fiske who each contributed their leader- ship skills to area youth. “We’ve lost two really great friends,” Fuller said. “Dan was the original master of our Troop #880 for six years and would take the boys backpacking and skiing. They had planned to go on a nine-day camping trip next week.” Fuller also mentioned Fiske’s success at mentoring Eagle Scouts with a total of five in six years, well above the national average of one every four years. Fiske studied piano from Valerie Brown and performed in her annual recital for several years. Recently he began play- ing duets with his daughter, Ceilidh (Kaylee), and also enjoyed riding his bicycle and boating with his son, Tristan. Dan Fiske’s parents, wife and children survive him, as well as his three siblings, Mike, Janelle and Steven. At the next regularly scheduled Cave Junction City Council meeting on August 12, the council will discuss plans for accept- ing applications to complete Fiske’s term of office which ends December 2014.
