Operations Manager Jodie Cowan and owner Phil Moskios have spent the last two years creating this unique attraction, which benefits greatly from its natural surroundings. “This place is beautified to no end,” Cowan said. Vertical Horizons offers a variety of activities on- site, including swimming, volleyball, horseshoes, hik- ing and catch-and-release bass fishing. A nine-hole disc golf course is also on the premises, and has proven to be quite popular. “We’ve had people come out here and say we have the best course,” Cowan said. Kenneth A. Johnson Kenneth A. Johnson, 85, of Cave Junction, died Mon- day, Feb. 19, 2007, at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass. A celebration of his life will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 3 at Sportsman Tavern in Cave Junction. Mr. Johnson was born Dec. 29, 1921 in Los Angeles to Arthur F. Johnson and Hattie D. Krause Johnson. In 1939 he graduated from Washington High School in Los Angeles. After graduation, he was em- ployed by Pacific Process Printing until 1942. From Nov. 19, 1942 to Oct. 27, 1945 he served in the U.S. Army. He was a machine gunner, and later a combat rifle platoon sergeant with the 91st Infantry Division and the 361st Infantry Regiment. He served in North Africa, Sicily and on the Italian mainland, and was involved in the Battle for Salarno and the Battle for An- zio, where his outfit was in- volved in the capture of “Anzio Annie.” His unit spent 200 con- tinuous days in direct contact with enemy forces. After separation from the Army he worked for Jorgensen Steel Corp. in Los Angeles for 38 years as a truck driver. On Jan. 10, 1959 in Las Vegas, Nev. he married the former Dorothy S. Rosen of Belleville, Ill. In 1984 he retired, and they moved from Southgate, Calif. to Cave Junction. He was actively involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Illinois Valley Senior Center activities. He enjoyed camping, fishing and bowling and led weekly shuffleboard tourna- ments. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy S. Johnson, of Cave Junction. Oliver Nelson Bennett Oliver Nelson Bennett, 61, of Kerby, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007 at his residence. Mr. Bennett was born on Aug. 15, 1945 in Bell, Calif. He was a night watchman for Kauffman Wood Products in Kerby. He is survived by two brothers, LeRoy Bennett, of Mt. Pleasant, Ark., and Leslie Bennett, of La Mirada, Calif.; three sisters, Nancy Wann, of Batesville, Ark.; Connie Yoakum, of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., and Luana Boyan, of San Diego. They come complete with electricity, decks, hot water, sinks and toilets, al- lowing guests a sense of relaxation with all the con- veniences of home. Guests have come from as far as Switzerland and the East Coast to experience the special hospitality at Verti- cal Horizons, Cowan said. Aside from recreation, the site also features special gourmet breakfasts cooked by Moskios, complete with a chef’s presentation. “Phil is the host with the most,” Cowan said. Cowan said that special care is taken to ensure that the guests’ individual die- tary needs are catered to. “We want to make our guests happy and give them something to do,” Cowan said. “We want to take the time to make it personal.” For the future, Cowan said that she would like to add three more tree houses, and hopes to have one of them ready by the summer. She also plans to make pad- dleboats available so guests can better enjoy the two on- site ponds, and would like to host weddings and other events. Vertical Horizons is open year-round.
