Page 4 Brenton W. Monsma Cave Junction resident Brenton W. Monsma, a volun- teer with Illinois Valley Fire District (IVFD) and a retired newspaper and radio station employee and entrepreneur, died at home Dec. 2, 2006. A memorial service is set for Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 10 a.m. at Takilma Bible Church. Remembrances can be made to MDA-ALS Division, 4800 S.W. Macadam Ave. #205, Portland OR 97329; or Takilma Bible Church, 10343 Takilma Road, Cave Junction OR 97523. Mr. Monsma was born May 4, 1940 in Grand Rapids, Mich., where he graduated high school and attended Grand Valley State College. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1959 and served aboard the USS “Canberra,” a guided missile cruiser, in the Mediter- ranean. After his honorable discharge in 1963, he worked as circulation manager of the “Virginia Pilot” newspaper in Newport until 1970. He then returned to Grand Rapids in 1971 and married his wife, Trudy. He also began working that year as circulation manager for the “Detroit Free Seventh-day Adventist Church, Cave Junction Pastor Verne and Patty Hyland are praising the Lord as they return to their caring congregation in Cave Junction. Pastor Hyland had sur- gery at Loma Linda Univer- sity Medical Center in Loma Linda, Calif., but came through in a miraculous way due to the prayers of the faithful congregation in Cave Junction. He and his wife are thankful for such dedicated Prayer Warriors. The choir is busy prac- ticing for the Christmas Pro- gram that will be held in the church sanctuary Saturday, Dec. 23 at 11 a.m. The com- munity can attend and stay for the special Christmas dinner. Choir practice will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Teen Room. Thursday, Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m. will mark the Madrone Adventist School musical Christmas Program in the church sanctuary, 265 S. Old Stage Road, Cave Junction. Anyone wishing to attend this lovely, traditional Christmas program will be welcome. There will be re- freshments afterward. Mr. Monsma enjoyed Barbership singing, having sung with “Hometown Har- mony Tradition” in Wisconsin for 11 years, and “Rogue Val- ley Harmonizers” in Medford for two years. He was an active member of Takilma Bible Church. He also was a volun- teer with IVFD, where he was able to fulfill his desire to be of service to the community. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and outdoor walks. He began to enjoy fly- tying and woodworking before the onset of ALS (Lou Gehrig Disease) made it too difficult for him to pursue his favorite pastimes. ALS progressed un- usually rapidly, and his passing peacefully is seen by his family as a blessing. Mr. Monsma is survived by his wife, Trudy Monsma, of Cave Junction; six children, Linda VancieZande, of Fond du Lac, John Scholte, of San Diego, Ron Scholte, of Gobles, Mich., Deborah Whitehurst, of Virginia Beach, Va., LeAnn Bunting, of Chesapeake, Va., and Davie Monsma, of Cave Junction; five sisters, Lorain Krenecki, of Santa Rosa, Calif., Mary Daling, of Jenison, Mich., Kathy VanVliet, of Newaygo, Mich., Paticia Hoogesheide, of Pierson, Mich., and Crystal Harris, of Pierson; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father, William L. Mon- sma, on Nov. 26, 2006; and his mother, Margaret Monsma, in 2001; and a brother, Norman Monsma, in 1972. She was born Edith Marion Levy on Dec. 2, 1919 in the Borough of Bronx in New York City. She moved to Oakland, Calif. in 1940, and worked at the Oakland Army Base from 1941 to 1956. She married Jim Clarke in 1946. Mrs. Clarke worked in a school lunch program until she and her husband moved to O’Brien in 1970. She was employed as a teller and escrow clerk at the former Western Bank in Cave Junction from 1970 to 1975. From 1975 to 1979 she served the city of Cave Junction as treasurer, city clerk, recorder and Municipal Court judge, and then semiretired. In April 1983 she was hired as Senior Meal Site coor- dinator in Cave Junction, work- ing for Josephine County Com- munity Services. Most re- cently, until suffering a broken hip, she worked in the Jose- phine County Bldg. in Cave Junction for the county Com- munity Justice Office. “Marion” was president of Illinois Valley Senior Center for three years, and was known for her sense of humor. Noted her family, “She was an inspi- ration to many and will be missed by her family, friends and others whose lives she touched.” She is survived by a daughter, Judy Engstrom, of Grants Pass; two sons, Stephen Clarke, of Dayton, Ohio, and Ken Clarke, of O’Brien; seven grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, who was ex- tremely active in county Search And Rescue, in July 1988. Fillyaw James Henry Fillyaw, 81, of Cave Junction, died Thurs- day, Nov. 30, 2006 at his home. Mr. Fillyaw was born June 12, 1925 in Cedar Creek, N. Carolina. On June 6, 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam War. He was honorably dis- charged on Jan. 22, 1964. On Sept. 26, 1986 in Es- condido, Calif. he married Mary “Betty” Wilfong. They lived in Poway, Calif. until moving to Cave Junction on Nov. 25, 1989. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the American Legion. Mr. Fillyaw especially enjoyed woodworking. He built miniature wagons, for which he won awards while in California; and one wagon, which went to the Josephine County Historical Society. He also built grandfather clocks and mantle clocks, which have found homes around the world. Besides his wife, Mary “Betty” Fillyaw, of Cave Junc- tion; survivors include a daugh- ter, Gayle Werden, of Selma; a sister, Rosa Johnson, of North Dartmouth, Mass.; one grand- child; and several nieces and nephews.
