Page 13 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, September 21, 2005 Schooling baitfish a likely lure for getting bass to bite (Editor’s Note: Factual information for ‘Blotter’ is provided by official law en- forcement agencies. All per- sons listed are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Charges can be amended or dismissed.) * * * Thursday, Sept. 8 *Recklessly doing “brodies” on the Selma Se- lect Market parking lot at 2:30 a.m., the driver of a blue car threw stones at an- other man’s truck, provok- ing his ire. No charges were filed, and the driver was warned about his behavior. *The Rough & Read flat area was searched for a possible marijuana grow at 9 a.m. *A suspected marijuana grow near Davis Creek Road may have burned in the Deer Creek Fire, investi- gators deduced after a search of the area. *A man unknown to the manager of a Cave Junction RV park staggered in and passed out by the laundry room. The manager was ad- vised to phone again if the passed-out man became a problem. *Daniel F. McIntosh, 19; and Christal Rae Senn, 18, were cited on charges of open container, and the driver of the car in which they were contacted was warned for defective tail- lights when stopped on Lakeshore Drive at Reeves Creek Road at 8:16 p.m. *Trespassers who’ve been living on BLM prop- erty off Pine Cone Drive for “the past several weeks” were reported to deputies at 11 a.m., and BLM was in- formed. Friday, Sept. 9 *The owner of a report- edly stolen vehicle was noti- fied of its discovery on Wells Drive and Old Stage Road. *Two people were warned for trespassing in the vicinity of Selma First Bap- tist Church at 3:30 p.m. *On Patton Bar Drive, the new owner of a home was having difficulty with a former tenant who refused to leave and blocked the drive with her car. *A caller at 7 p.m. was concerned about vehicles whose drivers gathered at Jubilee Park to race up and down S. Junction Ave. at speeds of 40-50 mph. *Shawna Marie Jacobsen, 27, was cited on a charge of speeding near milemarker 22 of Redwood Hwy. at 8:39 p.m. *An intoxicated person, who was nearly struck by a By LARRY NIXON It’s September, and the kids are already back in the classroom. But did you know that it’s during this time of year that bass will go back to school, too? Back to schools of baitfish, that is. The baitfish that hatched earlier in the year are now the ideal size for bass forage. And sometimes during the day, bass will tear through these schools devouring as many as they can. When bass are targeting schools of bait- fish like this, they can make easy targets for anglers. To make this happen, you need to find the schools - - and it’s easier than you think. Combine good elec- tronics, good instincts and a heavy focus on cover near deep water, and it’s likely you’ll find a school. Keep in mind, though, that later in the month (depending on what part of the country you are in) these schools will be migrating up rivers and backs of coves. But until then, they will be in deep water -- and the bass will be laying in cover (boat docks, standing timber) nearby waiting for the right time to feed. So the object of the game is coaxing these prolific predators into biting in-between meals. If I see baitfish schooling or see bass engaged in a feed- ing frenzy it really simplifies things for me. I just go to the nearest cover. They might not be there at that moment, but they are close and most likely won’t be actively feeding. That’s why we have to work a little harder to get them to bite. Try downsizing your line and slowing down your presentation if the fish seem finicky. When targeting bass like this, I like a small swim bait such as a Berkley 3-inch Power Pogy or a 5-inch Pow- erBait Jerk Shad -- but a lot of different baits will do fine. The murkier the water the heavier the line you can use, but try to use as light a line as you think you can get away with. * * * (Larry Nixon is a former Bassmaster Classic champion with more than $1.5 million in career earnings on the BASS Tour. Nixon lives with his wife and three children in Bee Branch, Ark.) vehicle as he rolled around the parking lot of a Cave Junction business, was warned of trespassing at that location, warned about dis- orderly conduct, and given a ride home by someone who knew him. *Left for a short time while the owner was mov- ing items to a building on S. Redwood Hwy. in Down- town CJ, a car was reported stolen at 9:08 p.m. *A fellow diving a blue Chevy pickup truck said that the driver of a black Ford pickup truck had been chasing him around Cave Junction all night, trying to kill him. *Dean Lyle Smith, 34, was cited on charges of driving uninsured and lack- ing insurance, and his vehi- cle towed from where he was contacted on N. Red- wood Hwy. and E. Lister Street at 9:44 p.m. *Though he is “usually the one who gets in trouble” for yelling at his neighbor’s dog over the fence, a man on Addison Lane wanted it known that his neighbor’s dog barks non-stop and that no deputy ever talks to them about it.
