By LARRY NIXON
It’s September, and the
kids are already back in the
classroom.
But did you know that
it’s during this time of year
that bass will go back to
school, too? Back to schools
of baitfish, that is.
The baitfish that hatched
earlier in the year are now the
ideal size for bass forage.
And sometimes during the
day, bass will tear through
these schools devouring as
many as they can. When bass
are targeting schools of bait-
fish like this, they can make
easy targets for anglers.
To make this happen,
you need to find the schools -
- and it’s easier than you
think. Combine good elec-
tronics, good instincts and a
heavy focus on cover near
deep water, and it’s likely
you’ll find a school.
Keep in mind, though,
that later in the month
(depending on what part of
the country you are in) these
schools will be migrating up
rivers and backs of coves. But
until then, they will be in
deep water -- and the bass
will be laying in cover (boat
docks, standing timber)
nearby waiting for the right
time to feed. So the object of
the game is coaxing these
prolific predators into biting
in-between meals.
If I see baitfish schooling
or see bass engaged in a feed-
ing frenzy it really simplifies
things for me. I just go to the
nearest cover. They might not
be there at that moment, but
they are close and most likely
won’t be actively feeding.
That’s why we have to
work a little harder to get
them to bite. Try downsizing
your line and slowing down
your presentation if the fish
seem finicky.
When targeting bass like
this, I like a small swim bait
such as a Berkley 3-inch
Power Pogy or a 5-inch Pow-
erBait Jerk Shad -- but a lot
of different baits will do fine.
The murkier the water the
heavier the line you can use,
but try to use as light a line as
you think you can get away
with.

vehicle as he rolled around
the parking lot of a Cave
Junction business, was
warned of trespassing at that
location, warned about dis-
orderly conduct, and given a
ride home by someone who
knew him.
*Left for a short time
while the owner was mov-
ing items to a building on
S. Redwood Hwy. in Down-
town CJ, a car was reported
stolen at 9:08 p.m.
*A fellow diving a blue
Chevy pickup truck said

Junction all night, trying to
kill him.
*Dean Lyle Smith, 34,
was cited on charges of
driving uninsured and lack-
ing insurance, and his vehi-
cle towed from where he
was contacted on N. Red-
wood Hwy. and E. Lister
Street at 9:44 p.m.
*Though he is “usually
the one who gets in trouble”
for yelling at his neighbor’s
dog over the fence, a man
on Addison Lane wanted it
known that his neighbor’s
dog barks non-stop and that
no deputy ever talks to them
about it.

U.S. Forest Service property
near the 26000 block of
Redwood Hwy. were said to
be a recurring problem at
6:22 p.m.

tank was left lying on the
ground, the apparently in-
toxicated occupants of a
Toyota pickup truck extri-
cated the vehicle from the
ditch in which they’d found
themselves in the 20000
block of Redwood Hwy. at
1:37 a.m.

ters, 29, was cited on a
charge of exceeding the
speed limit on Redwood
Hwy. in Kerby.
*Although it was re-
ported that there was a heli-
copter on property at Hol-
land Loop and Takilma
Road, the owner confirmed
that there was no aircraft
there.
*The driver of a black
Toyota pickup truck with a
canopy allegedly struck and
killed a dog without stop-
ping in the 4900 block of
Lakeshore Drive at 7 p.m.
He was contacted and ad-
vised that “in the future” he
ought to “stop and attempt
to locate the owner of the
dog he runs over.”
*The drivers of two cars
pulled up next to each other
on Lister Street and then
ducked onto a parking lot,
where they proceeded to
fight each other with base-
ball bats, an eyewitness said.
*Shawn R. Wagoner,
39, was cited on a charge of
lack of operator’s permit on
Sauer’s Flat at 7 p.m.
*Extra Community Ori-
ented Policing was con-
ducted throughout the Cave
Junction area between 10
p.m. and midnight.
Tuesday, Sept. 13
*David James Wadell,
22, was cited on a charge of
