Thomas also said that she has the names of three persons possibly linked to the burglary at the city swimming pool July 10, and that she gave the names to a deputy. In other business the council voted 5-0 to declare a nuisance and proceed with legal action against Robbie and Joan Robinson in con- nection with someone living in a travel trailer at their business. The couple have refused to comply with a city ordi- nance prohibiting someone living on a commercial site. The Robinsons said that the person is a night watchman who has prevented vandal- ism and burglary. Others say that the per- son lives there, and that a large number of undesirable people are congregating at the site. Chief Harry Rich, of I.V. Fire District, was at Monday’s meeting, and told the council that a citation could be issued at the loca- tion if there is one more inci- dent of an open burn near the watchman’s location. Material in a 55-gallon drum apparently has been ignited some evenings. You want the valley to know about it? However, the quality of the water available is never certain, especially in the Selma area, Lyford said. OSU, salmon beneficiaries of U.S. largesse U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) announced that the Senate Appropriations Com- mittee has approved funding for the Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Fund and for Ore- gon State University (OSU) for oceanic observation re- search. The funding approved was included in the Senate’s FY 2006 Commerce/Justice/ Science (CJS) funding bill. The legislation next will be considered by the full Sen- ate, and then a House- Senate conference commit- tee, which will direct addi- tional funds to specific pro- grams across the nation. “The funding approved for oceanic research is par- ticularly important and timely in light of the recent tsunami warnings along the West Coast,” said Wyden. The Senate FY 2006 CJS Appropriations bill in- cludes funding for the fol- lowing programs: *The Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Fund will receive $13 million for Ore- gon to fund habitat restora- tion, and data collection. *Oregon State Univer- sity at Corvallis will receive $2 million for development of the Oregon Coastal Ocean Observing System. It will consist of instrumenta- tion deployed in the ocean to return real-time data to help improve the safety and efficiency of U.S. marine operations and to mitigate effects of natural disasters including tsunami. Funding of $118.9 mil- lion also was approved for 13 regional initiatives that will benefit Oregon, the senator said ‘CLOSE CALL’ FIRE - A fire of undetermined, but suspicious nature came within a foot of reaching a home at 2161 White Schoolhouse Road Monday, July 18, said Chief Harry Rich, of Illinois Valley Fire District (IVFD). Eight units from IVFD, Oregon Dept. of Forestry, and U.S. Forest Service responded to the 6:02 p.m. alarm. Rich said that a trailer made from a pickup truck bed, a chair, and a cloth cover over a car were destroyed by the fire. He said that firefighters had the fire knocked down in 14 minutes. Short, chubby man takes money, smokes in GP A bearded, musta- chioed man standing ap- proximately 5-6 and weighing some 265 pounds robbed the Bi-Mor gas sta- tion on Seventh Street in Grants Pass, said the city department of public safety. The incident was re- ported Monday, July 19 at 6:34 p.m. A clerk said that a man came to the store to buy cigarettes, but when he opened the cash drawer, the man pushed him down and grabbed money from the open drawer. He also grabbed two packs of cigarettes. The suspect told the clerk that he a gun, and left. Although the man left on foot, the employee said that he saw a red four-door Honda drive away.
