Page 11 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, December 8, 2004 Planning under way at caves for 100th anniversary denoting its designation as a national monument By CHRISTINA HILL Correspondent More than one million travelers use Hwy. 199 every summer to reach their destinations, as Illinois Val- ley sits between Hwy. 101 and Interstate 5. Only a small percentage stop and enjoy what Illinois Valley has to offer. “We get maybe 10 per- cent of those million travel- ers, which is a really low number,” said Roger Brandt, chief of visitor services at Oregon Caves National Monument, approximately 20 miles east of Downtown Brandt has concrete reasons for feeling the time crunch, too, he said. “First we have to plan what events we’d like to see held,” he said, “then we have to put those plans into action. Ideas are ideas, but the hard part is getting the work done,” Brandt said. Brandt said that he hopes to see more wheel- chair accessible trails and more family oriented activi- ties available at Oregon Caves. “We’re trying to meet the needs of people in all sectors of travel,” he said. “Then we would pro- mote the event jointly and put it in all our press packets and mail those to our associ- ated press contacts.” The goal of the centen- nial celebration, Brandt said, is to not only commemorate the monument, but also to nourish the tourism econ- omy in the area. “If we can stop 5 or 10 million tourist dollars, then we can create a sustainable number of jobs for new families and new business opportunities,” Brandt said. Additional goals Brandt would like to see met are to Some 90,000 people visit Oregon Caves National Monument every year. Planning for the monument’s 100th anniversary celebration are under way. (Photo courtesy of National Park Service, U.S. Dept. of the Interior) Cave Junction. “We’d like to increase that number to 20 percent,” he said, “which would help increase an additional 5 mil- lion tourist dollars spent in the area.” Brandt and others at the monument already have started planning. They’ve decided to use the centennial anniversary of the designa- tion of the site as Oregon Caves National Monument, by President Howard Taft in July 1909, as a way to reel in more tourists. The 100th anniversary will not occur until July 1, 2009. But planning, which is starting to progress quickly, should have started sooner, said Brandt. “I have to have my planning five years in ad- vance for the National Park Service to make sure we have the funding and the staff to handle the event,” he said. “I probably should have started last year, because time is just vaporizing,” he said. “We have a couple of goals that we’re trying to accomplish and those would be tourism infrastructure, getting trails established and possibly interpretive way- sides that people will stop to read about that particular area,” said Brandt. Much work remains before the centennial cele- bration. “We’re talking about a week-long series of special events here at the monu- ment,” said Brandt, “and we’re talking to people who might be interested in par- ticipating in the theme of the centennial. “call attention to the Oregon Caves, but also provide an outlet of information to other areas in the valley.” “If we have a lot of events going on, “we might be able to generate travel in the area.,” he said. “We want to start the week before the anniversary and have a history confer- ence, a historic equestrian ride on the trail that old- timers once used to access the caves from Williams. “We’d have to re- establish the trail, and the biggest cost would be doing environmental-compliance work. Lastly, we’d like to have a reunion of people who’ve worked here in the past,” Brandt said. And there’s more. “Along with the centen- nial celebration, there are a couple of other significant events happening the same year, and we’d like to tie them all together,” said Brandt. “It will be the 75 th anni- versary of the Oregon Caves Lodge and of the Civilian Conservation Corps. “And, it’ll be the 70 th anniversary of when the inventor and the promoter of The Viewmaster met in the lodge to discuss or draw up plans for The Viewmaster,” Brandt said. According to Brandt, he and others from the monu- ment plan on having com- munity meetings after the holiday season to discuss participation opportunities. “If we get these projects in place, and we get the needs met of different tour- ism groups, then we can create an influx of people for a few years to come after the centennial celebration,” Brandt concluded.
