Ellen Philomena O’Sullivan, 78, of Cave Junction, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004 at home. A private memorial ser- vice will be held later. Southern Oregon Guild opens Downtown CJ store Illinois Valley-based Southern Oregon Guild has been awarded its first grant since becoming a 501(c)3 organization. Josephine County Cul- tural Coalition awarded the Learning Through Art pro- ject of the Illinois River Val- ley Arts Council $1,450 to support the Day of the Dead Art program in 2005. Penny Niemi, Cate Ben- dock and Kathy Nelly ac- cepted the award check at a public presentation Nov. 17. The Southern Oregon Guild is now the proud owner (renter) of a Down- town Cave Junction store front for its new Technical Services Center. The focus of the center is to provide needed ser- vices, (digital imaging, pho- tography, on-line autioning, shipping, recycled print car- tridges, grant writing, web management, etc.) for mem- bers and the public. Members will offer a Christmas Bazaar for gift sales between Thanksgiving and Christmas. “We blasted off by opening the doors during the I.V. Art Walk Nov. 11,” said the Guild. “It was a grand party, and we met lots of great local people, Grants Pass visitors and even Eugene visitors, who all gave us supportive feedback about the need for this kind of endeavor.” Once the holidays are concluded, and the Christ- mas Bazaar finished, the primary purpose of the store will take precedence: to of- fer services. Between now and then the Guild will finalize the use and staffing policies and do some interior and exte- rior prep work. Christmas tree permits available from USFS, BLM Enjoy the great out- doors while keeping a Christmas tradition alive. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service in S.W. Oregon are selling personal- use Christmas tree permits through a combined pro- gram to serve communities. The permit tags are $5 each and can be purchased from any Medford or Coos Bay BLM office or any Rogue River-Siskiyou Na- tional Forest office. Permits are also sold at local ven- dors; phone the forest ser- vice for more information. Trees can only be har- vested on BLM or forest service land covered under the permit. Harvest is not allowed in wilderness areas, camp- grounds, tree plantations, within 200 feet of state high- ways, and other prohibited areas. The tags must be at- tached to trees during trans- port. For more information about the permits or office business hours, contact the nearest BLM or forest ser- vice office. “Your safety is our con- cern,” said the agencies. “Before leaving home, check weather and road con- ditions; carry needed equip- ment like a saw, gloves, warm clothing, and tire chains; and notify others of your planned trip into the forest.” The following stipula- tions will always apply: *A permit is required for the harvest of each tree. *Trees can only be talem on public land where allowed by this permit. *Do not harvest trees in wilderness areas, national monuments, wild and scenic rivers, campgrounds, devel- oped areas, fenced or posted tree plantations, within 200 feet of state highways, or on private property. *Permits or trees cannot be resold. *Cut only trees that are less than 12 feet tall. The tree should be cut as close to the ground as possible, and not more than 12 inches above the ground. Cut your tree only if there is another tree within 12 feet of it. *After harvesting your tree, validate the permit by cutting out the year and date, and attaching the per- mit to your tree before trans- porting it. *Respect all road and area closures. In Scottsdale, Ariz. he learned marimba and xylophone. He became proficient in a variety of percussion instruments as well. Brian made his home in Seattle, Wash. through the ‘80s and in San Francisco, Calif. In the ‘90s. Now at home in Cave Junction, Brian has been active in the Grants Pass theater scene, as well as performing musically in assorted locations locally. His theater credits include stints with Connect the Dots and with the Rogue Musical Theater. Wed., the 1st of Dec., Brian began a new musical venture at the G Street Bar & Grill in Grants Pass.
