Page 12 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, October 13, 2004 Barry honored at IVHS HISTORIC SCHOOL AT KERBYVILLE MUSEUM - The still-standing Grimmett Schoolhouse, believed to be one of the few remaining one-room schools in the state is located at Kerbyville Museum. It is believed that the structure, used from 1898 to 1906, was located on Sucker Creek. Members of the museum historical group want to restore the old school so that it can be visited again by tourists, but funding is a problem. ODOT has applications for transport-linked projects A request for project proposals for its Transpor- tation Enhancement (TE) program is announced by Oregon Dept. of Transpor- tation (ODOT). The TE program pro- vides federal funds for pro- jects that “strengthen the cultural, aesthetic, and en- vironmental value of our transportation system,” said ODOT. Transportation En- hancement activities in- clude: *Provision of facilities for pedestrians and bicy- clists. *Provision of safety and educational activities for pedestrians and bicy- clists. *Acquisition of scenic easements and scenic or historic sites. *Scenic or historic highway programs (including the provision of tourist and welcome center facilities). *Landscaping and other scenic beautification. *Historic preservation. *Rehabilitation and operation of historic trans- portation buildings, struc- t u r e s , o r fa c i l i t i e s (including historic railroad facilities and canals). *Preservation of aban- doned railway corridors (including the conversion and use of pedestrian or bicycle trails). *Control and removal of outdoor advertising. *Archaeological plan- ning and research. *Mitigation to address water pollution due to highway runoff or reduce vehicle-caused wildlife mortality while maintain- ing habitat connectivity. *Establishment of transportation museums. Projects are selected through a statewide proc- ess based on application and field review. Applica- tions are accepted from local, state or federal agen- cies; Indian tribes; and tax- funded districts. Private organizations can apply in partnership with a public agency. Recipients must supply matching funds to cover at least 10.27 percent of the project cost. Results will be announced in May 2005 after Oregon Transporta- tion Commission approval. Applications are due Sept. 10, 2004. Approxi- mately $7.9 million is available in Oregon for projects that can be ready for contract in 2007 and 2008. Selected projects will become part of Ore- gon’s 2006-2009 State- wide Transportation Im- provement Program. Serena Barry, daughter of Susanne Fahrnkopf, is October Josephine County Commissioners Student of the Month at Illinois Val- ley High School. A senior, she has maintained a grade-point average of 4.075. She has held the office of junior class treasurer, and is currently senior class treasurer. Serena is a member of the drama club, choir, Mathletes, College Dreams, IVHS Chapter of National Honor Society and ASPIRE, and volun- teered at the recent Cycle Oregon visit to Selma. She has played on the volleyball, basketball and softball teams. She was given the varsity basketball “Most Improved” award, and a Student of Merit Award in math. Serena has completed her CIM. She was nomi- nated for “Who’s Who SERENA BARRY Among American High School Students and Ath- letes.” Afte r gr aduation, Serena is considering Seat- tle University, Whitman, or George Fox University. She is interested in law, theater and business, but undecided on a major.
