That’s the message from Oregon Dept. of Ag- riculture (ODA), as it is- sues its annual caution to consumers beginning to use their wood stoves and fireplaces as nights be- come colder. While most firewood sellers deliver accurate amounts, said ODA, it’s always a good idea to make sure that those deliv- eries “measure up.” “The only correct method of sale for fire- wood is by the cord, frac- tion of a cord, or by cubic meter,” said ODA. “There are other terms such as face cord, rack, rick, pile or truck load that are used, but are not correct methods of sale. A cord is a known, verifiable standard.” You don’t know what you’re getting with a “pile” of firewood. But a cord is always the same amount: 128 cubic feet of VALLEY ART A‘PLENTY - A little rain on Friday, Oct. 8 seemed to keep the crowds away for Second Friday Art Walk in and around Downtown Cave Junction, ap- parently because people were afraid they would melt. It can be 4 feet high by 4 feet wide by 8 feet long. It can be 2 feet high by 8 feet wide by 8 feet long. Just so it stacks up to 128 cubic feet, said ODA. It’s always a good idea to have the wood stacked tightly at delivery. “There are at least two things we recommend to consumers purchasing fire- wood,” said ODA. “First, be present during the de- livery and observe.” “Second, have it stacked -- either you do it or pay the seller to stack it for you. The extra cost may be well worth it.” The bottom line is to be alert during firewood transactions and unafraid to report suspicions to ODA’s Measurement Stan- dards Division at (503) 986-4670. That way, said ODA, you won’t come out on the short end of the stick.
