We are all here for a spell; get all the good laughs you can. - Will Rogers - F. Wayne Swearingen enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and wood work- ing. He was a collector of bears and carved them also. Throughout the years, he made sure that each member of his family re- ceived an original wood work that he had made. In addition to his wife, Frances of Cave Junction; survivors include four sons, Billy Wayne and Larry Francis Swearingen, both of Eagle Point; Robert Lee Swearingen of Medford; and Kenneth Dale Swearingen of Grants Pass; a daughter, Penny Irene Boucher of Cave Junction; a sister Thelma Sarratt of Brookings; two brothers, Elbert “Sonny” Swearingen of Grants Pass; and Lawrence Swearingen of Denver, Col.; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Margy “Squeek” Snyder on Oct. 4, 1998. Cave Junction resident Wayne Swearingen, 72, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004 at Three Rivers Com- munity Hospital in Grants Pass. Visitation was held Sunday, Aug. 22 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors in Grants Pass. A memorial service was held graveside Monday, Aug. 23 at Mis- souri Flat Cemetery in Murphy. Pastor Mark McClean officiated. South- ern Oregon Cremation Ser- vices were in charge of arrangements. Mr. Swearingen was born July 1, 1932 in Mur- phy, Oregon and grew up in the Murphy and Wil- liams area. He was a descendant of Lincoln Savage, who was his great uncle. On January 30, 1950 he married Frances Margy Firestone in Grants Pass, who survives. There they raised six children while Mr. Swearingen worked in logging and road building as a cat skinner. In 1976 they moved to Cave Junction where they co-owned and operated F&W Clothing and Sport- ing Goods. He retired in 1990. Mr. Swearingen at- tended Fountain of Life Assembly of God Church in Cave Junction, and he Catherine P. Torrance, of Cave Junction, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004. No services were held. Mrs. Torrance and her husband Guy were active members of the American Legion. She was preceded in death by her husband. Sur- vivors include a sister, a brother, and two nieces. St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church When we read about humility from Luke’s Gos- pel on the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, the words of Jesus will sound famil- iar, “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor.” The passage continues, “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Looking for reward in life is not what Jesus recom- mends. He tells us that we will be repaid at the resur- rection of the righteous. Two GP men lose lives in pair of MVAs Separate single-vehicle accidents claimed the lives of two Grants Pass men this past weekend. On Saturday, Aug. 21, a four-door Toyota driven by Randy Lininger was southbound on U.S. Hwy. 199 near Wilderville when it left the roadway, striking a tree head-on. Lininger, 45, died at the scene. According to Oregon State Police (OSP) he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident. The next day, Aug. 22, a 21-year-old Grants Pass man lost control of his southbound 1993 BMW on I-5 near milepost 36. Michael Martinez was ejected from his vehicle when it left the roadway, struck a tree and rolled. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Martinez was not wearing a seatbelt, accord- ing to OSP.
