Page 12 Program at Dome Sch. for Rangers By SHANE WELSH Staff Writer (Second of two parts) Last year, the Takilma Dome School Rangers pro- gram obtained a Title III grant for non-profit forest related activities due to an educational trail that Rang- ers built around the school. Children can follow a “Nature guide” along a 3/4-mile trail providing woodland education about plants, wildlife and insects. Children can learn to take photos with a digital camera, and then get to look up information about plants using their photos. The Rangers have made ceramic examples of critters they found on the trail and plan to place ce- ramic signs they have made to identify Nature items along the trail. As grant funding dwindles, the Dome School Rangers program may slip through the finan- cial cracks. The program has been free for any children age 6 to 12 who want to attend; regardless of whether they are enrolled at the school. “That has proven to be the greatest challenge for the Rangers,” said Dave Toler, program director. “We’ve gone through seven years of grants from outside this community.” Funding began with an annual $23,000 Delin- quency Prevention Grant. According to Toler, Ever- green Elementary School used 18 months worth of the funding for its program before turning it over to Dome School. “The major support of the program has been the Josephine County Com- mission for Children and Families, which has helped support the program for seven years,” said Toler. After the first 18 months, the non-renewable federal grant ran out. For the next four years, the Rangers received half its funding from the Commis- sion for Children and Families. It granted ap- proximately $12,000 a year; with $15,000 to $18,000 obtained through private funds. “I will be leaving the program before school starts again,” said Toler. “It’s looking like it will be a mix of tuition and grants that will fund continuation of the program. Parents will likely have to pay some amount to keep their kids in the program.” So far, children who have never been to Dome School or heard of it have been able to make it their after-school home too. “I still think they (Dome School) plan on making the Rangers avail- able for anyone who wants to attend. If your child goes to Dome School, you already paid tuition, which will include the Rangers program,” said Toler. For those not attending the school, the extra fee (if implemented) to partici- pate in the program may be more than some can afford. “By investing in this program, we are contribut- ing to a healthier, safer community for our chil- dren,” said Toler. “I’m proud of what we have established with the Rang- ers. I hope, and have confi- dence that Dome School staff will be able to carry (the program) forth.” To enroll, phone Toler at 592-3911.
