Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, June 30, 2004 JoCo aims to be ready for disaster The magnitude of the Biscuit Fire of 2002 sub- jected local government officials to challenges that few of them had the train- ing and experience for, said Josephine County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO). On Tuesday, June 29, Josephine County commis- sioners, county department heads and other local offi- cials were trained in man- aging a local disaster re- sponse. Experts from the U.S. Forest Service, Oregon Dept. of Forestry and Ru- ral/Metro Fire Dept. intro- duced the trainees to the internationally utilized In- cident Command System (ICS) and the MultiAgency Coordination Group (MAC). The ICS and MAC are the accepted standard re- sponse systems for manag- ing all types of incidents and events from wildland fires and earthquakes to large public events and celebrations, said JCSO. The all-day training included lectures in the morning, followed by dis- aster scenarios in the after- noon. Training was con- ducted at the Interagency Fire Center, 657 Flaming Road, near the Merlin Air- port in Grants Pass. “I think we can all agree that the Biscuit Fire was a great learning ex- perience,” said Sara Nicholson, Josephine County emergency man- ager. “This training helped identify and educate key personnel to be part of the MAC group, and is vital to ensure a smooth running Emergency Operations Center in the event of a disaster.” When you talk, you repeat what you already know.
