I stumbled upon Ron Phillips on the Internet; I was looking for a volunteer position. When he found out that I had hotel experience, he asked me if I wanted to run the hotel. It got to be a dream job. I’ve been working at hotels since 1986. I worked at El Dorado Hotel in Reno, Nev. From there I went to Lake Tahoe, then to Sequoia Na- tional Park, then to Danali National Park in Alaska; then Valdez, Alaska; Fairbanks, Alaska; then to Maine before coming here last year. How was the trip? Well, my girlfriend and I just packed up a U-Haul trailer and headed out. We didn’t have a place to live, and I had never met the guy (Ron Phillips); kind of a leap of faith. We spent the first couple of weeks in a room at The Chateau until we found a place in town that we are rent- ing now. Was there much difference between here and the East Coast? Well, the attitudes are quite a bit different on the West Coast. I grew up on the West Coast, so I am more comfortable here than I was in Maine, that’s for sure. Folks on the East Coast are a little more uptight than peo- ple on the West. What do you like about working at The Chateau? It’s a beautiful building. Nice, small little lodge; it’s not too big. Working in the hotel business has allowed me to see many beautiful parts of the country. Working at The Chateau is a dream come true; kind of a melding to- gether of my love for helping the community and my love of old buildings and being up in the woods. Any family in the area? No, actually. I was born in Okinawa, Japan. My fa- ther worked in food service on an Air Force base there when I was a baby. When I was about 1 1/2 years old, we moved to Tucson, Ariz. where I grew up. My brother is still there. And I still own a place in the desert where I grew up. Once a year, I go back to Tucson to visit. Every time I go back home, I have a new appreciation for the desert. They are probably hitting 100 degrees right now. What do you like about Oregon? The mountains. Being out in the woods. I enjoy being amongst the trees and the rocks, and enjoy all that Nature has to offer. What do you like to do for fun? Well, we like to take our American Eskimo dog, “Max,” out for walks at Rough & Ready Creek. My girl- friend and I also like to go hiking and backpacking just about anywhere we can. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve done in your life? Well, last week I got to have lunch with former Vice President Walter Mondale; that was fun. It was interest- ing hearing him reminisce about the good old days and how government has changed over the last 30 years. When we were in Alaska, I got to climb on glaciers. I’ve also gone kayaking around glaciers too. My time in Alaska was some of the most exciting times I’ve had. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Green Tea. Redwood Hwy. to say he wanted to kill himself. The exact ori- gin of the call could not be determined, but all ap- peared ok in the area. *A man in the 100 block of Hogue Drive Re- ported his vehicle stolen at 3:49 a.m. *In the 3000 block of Caves Hwy. a cow which had been on the road at 7:37 a.m. was returned to its pasture. *A driver was warned for speeding at milepost 35 of Redwood Hwy. at 8:31 a.m. *While an officer was serving him with a re- straining order on Mona Way at 8:39 a.m., Cam- eron R. Dailey, 35, was cited to appear on a war- rant charging second de- gree criminal mischief. *Edwin O. Scott, 37, was arrested on a state warrant charging parole violation, at the I.V. sub- station at 8:49 a.m. *Eviction papers were left on the door of a resi- dence in the 100 block of Hogue Drive at 9:36 a.m. *Nicole A. McArthur, 37, was arrested on a war- rant charging failure to appear (FTA) on original charges of second-degree criminal trespass, second- degree criminal mischief, DWS, and a parole viola- tion. She was lodged in Josephine County Jail. *After a complaint about people camping at Illinois River “Forks” state park received at 9:45 a.m., a deputy checked the area. Nothing was found. *Assistance was ren- dered to a man with a dis- located hip in the 600 block of Waldo Road at 12:55 p.m. *An officer was un- able to locate anyone after a report of a man going from mailbox to mailbox, removing mail in the 3000 block of Rockydale Road at 1:01 p.m. *In the 3000 block of Rockydale Road, a man said at 3:45 p.m. that a window was broken to gain entry to his house and a rifle stolen two days be- fore. River Street called to voice her suspicions at 8:06 p.m. All were gone upon a deputy’s arrival. *A pair of horses were on the side of Redwood Hwy. at the top of Hays Hill at 8:17 p.m. *A driver was warned for FTO/TCD and no proof of insurance on N. Red- wood Hwy. at W. River Street at 8:30 p.m. *A driver was warned for VBR on Redwood Hwy. at Hogue Drive at 9:53 p.m. *A driver was warned for a defective driver’s side headlight at milepost 21 of Redwood Hwy. at 9:59 p.m. *Deputies checked the area around the 100 block of S. Redwood Hwy. look- ing for a man who would- n’t leave a business when asked at 9:59 p.m. He was not located, as he had left. *Switched license plates were taken from a man who denied driving to a suspicious location be- hind the Selma post office at 10:21 p.m. Saturday, April 24 *A driver was warned for having obscured plates on Old Stage Road at 9:30 a.m. *Two men in Selma were fighting over money owed at 11:07 a.m., but they worked it out and can- celed the request for a dep- uty. *A letter had been posted and circulated threatening her son’s life, a woman on N. Hussey Ave- Page 9 nue said at 10:47 a.m. *Several people were beating someone up at Ju- bilee Park, a caller said at 1:31 p.m. *In the 500 block of Watkins Street, a man said a woman who has a re- straining order against him approached and began ar- guing with him, and punched him in the chest at 6:02 p.m. *Misti Lin Yoshiwara, 31, was cited on a charge of DWS, and warned for FTO/TCD and failure to carry and present an opera- tor’s permit in the 18000 block of Redwood Hwy. at 8:25 p.m. *A vehicle on the side of Waldo Road was out of the roadway and not a haz- ard, a deputy determined at 9:51 p.m. *A driver was warned for speeding on Rockydale Road at 10:07 p.m. *An alarm sounded at a business in the 18000 block of Redwood Hwy. at 10:15 p.m. *A woman on S. Kerby Avenue said at 10:17 p.m. that her 21- year-old son came to her residence with his 15- month-old child and began threatening to kill every- one and punching holes in the walls. Then he left.
