Statistics show high figures for sexual abuse in Oregon Ten percent of Oregon women 20 to 55 years have experienced physi- cal or sexual vio- lence at the hands of their intimate partner during the past five years, a new state Dept. of Human Services (DHS) report re- veals. “Intimate part- ner violence is a significant public health problem,” said Dr. Mel Kohn, state epidemiolo- gist in DHS. “It takes a physical and emo- tional toll on the women who are harmed and can have a profound negative effect on children who wit- ness these acts of violence. It under- mines the social fabric of our com- munities.” The report is based on responses of 2,962 Oregon women to ques- tions about vio- lence they experi- enced within the previous five years or the past 12 months. The prevalence of vio- lence is likely higher than the report shows, since women were not questioned about their experience over a lifetime, Kohn said. Some of the findings: *At least one in 10 Oregon women 20 to 55 -- or more than 85,000 -- have ex- perienced intimate partner violence during the past five years. Almost 30,000 women, or 3 percent, experi- enced it in the 12 months preceding the survey. *Intimate part- ner violence results in serious physical injury. Thirteen percent of women physically as- saulted by an inti- mate partner and 41 percent of those sexually assaulted sustained serious injuries including broken bones, in- ternal injuries, head injuries, and lacerations or knife wounds. *Less than two-fifths of seri- ously injured women received medical care for their injuries. *Of the seri- ously injured women who sought medical LEGAL NOTICE IN THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF OREGON UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, Plaintiff v. 5655 WEST SIDE ROAD, AND 5667 WEST SIDE ROAD, CAVE JUNCTION, JOSEPHINE COUNTY, OREGON, REAL PROPERTY WITH BUILDINGS, APPURTENANCES AND IMPROVEMENTS, in rem, Defendants. In addition, any person having filed such a claim shall also file an answer to the complaint not later than 20 days after the filing of the claim. A copy of the claim and answer should be served upon, LESLIE J. WESTPHAL, Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA), at the same address. Publish April 14, 21, 28, and May 5 care, about three- fourths of physical assault victims and slightly more than 50 percent of sex- ual assault victims disclosed the source of their in- juries to medical personnel. *Women who experienced inti- mate partner vio- lence in the past five years reported poorer mental and physical health than women who did not. They also experienced higher rates of depression, anxiety, post- traumatic stress disorder, suicidal thoughts, and alco- hol and drug use. *Children wit- nessed 33 percent of intimate partner physical assaults and 20 percent of intimate partner sexual assaults. “The impact of intimate partner violence extends beyond immediate physical injuries,” said Kohn. “Many Oregon women suffer long-term consequences of past abuse. Clini- cians and mental health profession- als are uniquely positioned to iden- tify intimate part- ner violence and provide appropri- ate services and referrals.” Help for those who have been a victim of partner violence is avail- able by phoning th e J o sephin e County Women’s Crisis Support Team at (800) 750- 9278. Never assume that another driver will yield the right- of-way: Be pre- pared to stop, said Oregon Driver and Motor Vehicle Ser- vices (DMV). Said DMV: “Look both ways as you near an in- tersection. Look first to the left to make sure cross- traffic is yielding right-of-way; then look right. “As you enter the intersection, check again for unusual or unex- pected actions to the right or left,” DMV noted.
