Sullivan James R. “Sully” Sulli- van, 79, former city of Cave Junction mayor and director of public works, died Thursday, April 15 at his home in Cave Junction. A private service was arranged through Clausen’s Illinois Valley Funeral Home. Interment was at Eagle Point Na- tional Cemetery. Mr. Sullivan was born on April 4, 1925 in Pres- cott, Ariz. He moved to Illinois Valley in 1972 from Taft, Calif. He mar- ried Jean Sullivan (her maiden name) in 1950 in Las Vegas, Nev. Mr. Sullivan served one year as a member of the Cave Junction City Council, and he was the city’s director of public works for 17 years before retiring. He subsequently served as mayor for four years, and is recognized for spearheading the pro- gram to update the city’s water and sewer system. He was a respected member of the community, and well known to many for his friendliness. Mr. Sullivan was a veteran of the U.S. Army, who served in the Third Army in the European Theater. He enjoyed gold mining and fishing. He was a member of Glenn Morrison American Legion Post. He is survived by his wife, Jean Sullivan of Cave Junction; two sons, Rick Sullivan of Saginaw, Mich., and Dennis Sullivan of Henderson, Nev.; a sis- ter, Mary Richards of Ba- kersfield, Calif.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Ervin and Daisy Haynie Former Cave Junction residents Ervin and Daisy Haynie, 85 and 84 respec- tively, died of apparent accidental asphyxiation on Thursday, April 8, 2004 in Lincoln City, Ore. A funeral service was held there on Monday, April 12. The couple lived in Illinois Valley for 30 years before relocating last year to Lincoln City. It was reported that they were discovered by a housekeeper, who found the couple in their bed. Police said it appeared that their motor vehicle, in a garage adjacent to their apartment, had been left on, and that exhaust fumes filled the room. Surviving are four children, Vallace Moore of Lincoln City, Mike Haynie of Bishop, Calif., Norman Haynie of Malibu, Calif., and Sandy Linde of Out- look, Wash.; 16 grandchil- dren; and 19 great- grandchildren. In addition, Mr. Haynie is survived by three brothers, Orval Haynie and Marvin Haynie of Cave Junction, Gary Haynie of Palmdale, Calif.; and a sister, Dorothy of Las Vegas, Nev. Hikers should meet at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 25 on the lower parking lot at the Siskiyou Project of- fice, 9335 Takilma Road. They should bring binocu- lars, water and snacks. The hike will lead into Allen Gulch and an un- usual tan oak stand pro- posed by BLM as a Re- search Natural Area. The hike will follow a portion of the 1852 ditch created for hydraulic min- ing operations, past an his- toric cemetery and an ore milling site.
