J.R. Sullivan
James R. “Sully” Sulli-
van, 79, former city of
Cave Junction mayor and
director of public works,
died Thursday, April 15 at
his home in Cave Junction.
A private service was
arranged
through
Clausen’s Illinois Valley
Funeral Home. Interment
was at Eagle Point Na-
tional Cemetery.
Mr. Sullivan was born
on April 4, 1925 in Pres-
cott, Ariz. He moved to
Illinois Valley in 1972
from Taft, Calif. He mar-
ried Jean Sullivan (her
maiden name) in 1950 in
Las Vegas, Nev.
Mr. Sullivan served
one year as a member of
the Cave Junction City
Council, and he was the
city’s director of public
works for 17 years before
retiring. He subsequently
served as mayor for four
years, and is recognized
for spearheading the pro-
gram to update the city’s
water and sewer system.
He was a respected
member of the community,
and well known to many
for his friendliness.
Mr. Sullivan was a
veteran of the U.S. Army,
who served in the Third
Army in the European
Theater. He enjoyed gold
mining and fishing.
He was a member of
Glenn Morrison American
Legion Post.
He is survived by his
wife, Jean Sullivan of
Cave Junction; two sons,
Rick Sullivan of Saginaw,
Mich., and Dennis Sullivan
of Henderson, Nev.; a sis-
ter, Mary Richards of Ba-
kersfield, Calif.; four
grandchildren; and five

Ervin and Daisy
Haynie
Former Cave Junction
residents Ervin and Daisy
Haynie, 85 and 84 respec-
tively, died of apparent
accidental asphyxiation on
Thursday, April 8, 2004 in
Lincoln City, Ore.
A funeral service was
held there on Monday,
April 12.
The couple lived in
Illinois Valley for 30 years
before relocating last year
to Lincoln City.
It was reported that
they were discovered by a
housekeeper, who found
the couple in their bed.
Police said it appeared that
their motor vehicle, in a
garage adjacent to their

on, and that exhaust fumes
filled the room.

and Sandy Linde of Out-
look, Wash.; 16 grandchil-
