Fincher Former Illinois Valley resident Don Andrew Fincher, 63, of Oroville, Wash., died March 1, 2004 at his home. A funeral service was held Tuesday, March 9 at Illinois Valley Funeral Home. Burial took place at Laurel Cemetery in Cave Junction. Mr. Fincher was born Nov. 29, 1940, in Ingle- wood, Calif. He retired from the U.S. Forest Ser- vice and worked in timber sales. He moved to Illinois Valley in 1945 from Ingle- wood, then retired in Oro- ville, Wash. He was also a veteran who served in the armed forces during the Korean War. He is survived by his mother, Jewel Fincher, Cave Junction; three daughters, Nichole Pe- gram, Grants Pass, Tammy Blind and Cindy Johnson, both of Cave Junction; four brothers, Nathan and Clayton Fincher, both of Cave Junction, Neal Fincher, Medford, and George Fincher, Houston, Texas; a sister, Nina Mickey, Cave Junction; and eight grandchildren. He also leaves behind his lifelong partner, Donna Cardoza of Oroville. Condolence cards may be sent to Mr. Fincher’s mother at P.O. Box 8, Cave Junction, OR 97523. Jesus told a parable about a fig tree in an or- chard that had not pro- duced for three years. He told the gardener to cut it down, ut the gardener re- plied, “Sir, leave it for this year also and I shall culti- vate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not, you can cut it down.” Could it be that we are like the fig tree, not bear- ing fruit? Will someone speak for us and ask for more time, hoping that we will turn away from our sins and live as Jesus has directed us? Melvin L. Thayer Cave Junction resident Melvin L. Thayer, 83, died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Fairview Transitional Health Center in Grants Pass. A graveside service was held on Wednesday, March 10 at Eagle Point National Cemetery. A me- morial service was to fol- low at Community Bible Church. Mr. Thayer was born April 26, 1920, in Yuba City, Calif. He was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran. From 1950 to 1965 he was a teacher and principal in California schools. He taught fourth and sixth grades in Menlo Park, Calif. He went on to be- come a principal at several schools in California. He was the first principal of Fernando Rivera K-6 school in Daly City, Calif. From 1965 to 1975, he became the director of per- sonnel for Mountain View School District in Calif., where he was responsible for interviewing and hiring staff. Mr. Thayer moved to Illinois Valley in 1984 from Sunnyvale, Calif. He was an elder and director of visitation at Community Bible Church. He was the chaplain for the Gideons for several years. He is survived by his wife, Mary Thayer, of Cave Junction; two sons, Monty Thayer, of Char- lotte, N.C., and Michael Thayer, of Napa, Calif.; Three stepsons, Edward Duffield, of San Jose, Calif., Donald Duffield, of Winter Haven, Fla., and William Duffield, of Greenwich, N.J.; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The family suggests memorial donations to Community Bible Church, or to the Gideons.
