PRISON PLAN - “Operation Freedom,” a project of Cave Junction-based Life Lines, a prison ministry, will present founder Joy Hoskins and daughters Anita Anderson and Melanie Hoskins in concert on Friday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. at A Cup of Trembling, 522 N.E. “F” St. in Grants Pass. They’ll perform Southern Gospel music. The project is to get copies of “A Walk to Freedom” in prisons nationwide. The book is by I.V. resident John J. McLaughlin, who spent 25 years in prisons and is now “15 years out with Jesus.” NOTEPAD - Power was out for approximately 2,100 valley customers of Pacific Power on Saturday night, March 6. Some had power restored after 90 minutes, but some were without power for more than five hours until Pacific Power crews located and re- paired the problem. Hwy. 199 was closed for a time on Sunday afternoon, March 7 in the Sauer’s Flat area because of the need for a landing zone for a Mercy Flights helicopter. It was needed to evacuate a valley man who suffered a heart attack. “Event of the Year” for women by Illinois Valley Pregnancy Cen- ter is set for Saturday, March 27 from noon to 3 p.m. at Community Bible Church in CJ. Everyone plan to attend and have some fun! $250 college scholarship first for city For the first time, the city of Cave Junction is of- fering a college scholarship to help a qualifying student. The $250 scholarship will be awarded to a student who is a city resident; has demonstrated community involvement; and main- tained a minimum 2.5 grade-point average. The student must also be regis- tered for college courses. Applications are avail- able from the counseling office at Illinois Valley High School. The deadline to ap- ply is May 1. Marie Siemer, CPA. (Photo by Shane Welsh) Siemer ‘certifies’ her accounting work By SHANE WELSH Staff Writer “After working pri- vately for nearly 20 years in accounting, I decided to open the only Certified Public Accountant (CPA) office in Cave Junction,” said Marie E. Siemer, CPA. “I moved to Cave Junction in 1991 before graduating from Southern Oregon University in 1999. In November of 2001, I passed my CPA exam; finishing in the top 10 out of 563 candidates,” said Siemer. Originally from Sioux City, Iowa, Siemer has been working in the valley for more than 10 years. She also owns My Broth- ers Pub and Step Two in Cave Junction. “All CPAs have to work an internship of sorts. I worked with CPA Ken Behymer in Grants Pass for a year, and then for CPA Larry McMichael for an additional year,” said Siemer. When pouring gasoline into an engine, do so out- doors so that vapors can disperse into the air. Make sure that the equipment being refueled is cool, because the small- est gasoline spill onto a hot machine can cause a fire.
