The agenda will include a presentation by Rogue Community Col- lege representatives on filling out the FAFSA (federal student aid) appli- cation. Sandy Stellflug, an assistant principal, and Don Far mer, school coun- selor, will present informa- tion on local scholarships available to students. Ray Dinkins, coordinator of the ASPIRE program at IVHS, will provide information on his student advocacy program and how to apply for state and national level scholarships. Scholarship packets will be distributed at the conclusion of the meeting. I.V. Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. in Down- town CJ. Among participants (left) was the Hemp Fairy, as interpreted by Eugene resident Peggy Staalberg. All her offerings are made of hemp. The bazaar also fea- tured a wide range of craft and art items, much of it from Illinois Valley. Offerings also included pastries and hot food. Biscuit meeting draws ‘mixed bag’ By BRITT FAIRCHILD Staff Writer Approximately 40 people attended an open house in the Josephine County Bldg. in Down- town Cave Junction on Dec. 3 to ask questions, state their opinions and learn more about the Bis- cuit Fire Recovery Project. The draft environ- mental impact statement (DEIS), which proposes various methods of recov- ery of the fire area, has been released, and the pub- lic now has 45 days to make comment. “We’re really open to sharing what we did for the analysis and hearing peo- ple (share their opinions),” said Judy McHugh with outreach and communica- tions for the Biscuit Fire Recovery Project. The goal of the infor- mational session in CJ, as well as those on Dec. 4 in Grants Pass, Dec. 9 in Brookings and Dec. 10 in Gold Beach, is to help peo- ple better understand the document. McHugh said she spoke to several people one-on-one during the CJ and GP meetings and re- ceived a “full range of opinions.” “It’s a mixed bag,” she said, noting that some told her they want to see “absolutely nothing” done to the area while others feel that salvaging more board feet of timber killed by the Biscuit Fire is the answer. The U.S. Forest Ser- vice’s (USFS) proposal to log 518 million board feet is the preferred alternative in the DEIS. However, Forest Supervisor Scott Conroy will not make a final decision until next year after public comments have been reviewed. USFS representatives will be present at a fifth public meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 17 in the Josephine County Fair- grounds pavilion building to listen and record com- ments from individuals.
