Page 7 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, August 13, 2003 Center ... (Continued from page 1) building was canceled. This marks the second time residents have at- tempted to transform the school into a community center since TRSD closed it at the end of the 2000 school year to cut costs. Such an effort, Hunt said, requires an immense amount of effort and com- mitment to be successful. Hunt definitely exhib- its those qualities, said board of directors member Jan Walker, who has lived in Selma for more than three years. “Bill has a huge amount of energy,” she said. The center, Hunt said, will not only inform resi- dents about what is going on in Selma specifically, and the valley in general, and provide a community meeting place, but will also strive to promote Selma tourism as well. Anyone -- participants don’t have to live in Selma -- is welcome to suggest an idea for the center as long as it is safe, Walker said. The main desire is to incorporate the diversity of each individual in the com- munity into all areas of the center. “So no one feels left out,” Tennity said. That the organization is not affiliated with any one church, school or club, will hopefully help resi- dents feel comfortable par- ticipating in center pro- grams and events, Hunt said. There has already been a strong showing of sup- port for the center, Hunt added. During the first gen- eral planning meeting on July 14, dozens of people either volunteered to help out the group or signed a petition supporting the center. Another general meet- ing is scheduled on Mon- day, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. at the center. The fun part of it all, Bill said, will be watching the center grow and evolve. “Where we go is really going to be the exciting part of it,” Hunt said. For more information about the Selma Commu- nity and Education Center, to teach a class, or become a volunteer -- board mem- bers encouraged children and teen-agers to help out also -- phone Hunt at 597- 2494, Tennity at 597-2110 or Walker at 597-2410. IVHS class scheduling begins soon Class scheduling at Illinois Valley High School (IVHS) for the 2003-04 school year will begin on Friday, Aug. 15. Tenth, 11th and 12th graders will be scheduling on Aug. 15: seniors, 8 to 10 a.m.; juniors, 10 a.m. to noon; sophomores 1 to 4 p.m. Those unable to come at the above times can schedule between 4 and 6 p.m. on the same day. Students who will be in ninth grade will be scheduling on Tuesday, Aug. 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. Any student unable to schedule classes during the above times, may phone the school and set up an appointment for Wednes- day, Thursday or Friday, Aug. 20-22. Students un- able to attend will have a schedule created for them by the counseling office. Lovejoy hospice ... City merchants meet (Continued from page 1) (Continued from page 1) said. “Our focus is keeping people’s quality of life the highest we can.” Not just a place where people can pick up pam- phlets to take home and read -- although literature is available -- the goal of the center is to create a safe environment where individuals and families feel comfortable coming in to ask questions and talk one-on-one with the volun- teers about how hospice care might help them and their loved ones. All information given to the volunteers is confi- dential, noted Bill Shiery, who has volunteered for eight years. A visit to the center doesn’t automatically mean an individual must then receive hospice care. It is the first step in the i n f o r m a t i o n - ga t h e ri n g process. Once interest in Lovejoy care has been noted, a volunteer will take down the appropriate in- formation and a referral will be made. The inter- ested person or party can then contact the Grants Pass office, or someone from the office will contact them at their request. “(Lovejoy) doesn’t turn anyone away,” Shiery said. Individual donations and a donation from The James F. and Marion L. Miller Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation are funding the center in part, said Pam Allister, Lovejoy development co- ordinator. The center serves a particularly important function in the valley, said Remember, seniors are worth a fortune, with silver in their hair, gold in their teeth, stones in their kidneys, lead in their feet and gas in their stomachs. 1+ year volunteer Bonnie Greener because people often do not have the means or money to travel to Grants Pass. This way, they can still find out about Lovejoy without leaving their community. “They want to stay here. People feel comfort- able here,” Greener said. “Plus it makes it (the ex- perience) more intimate and accessible.” Cagle said she also hopes that once people hear about, or visit, the center more will want to volunteer. “We need a lot more volunteers out here than we have,” she said. Shiery added he hopes to see more men volunteer as a result of the center opening. Allister added that the center is strictly an infor- mation center, and not where people should go for medical emergencies. The center also doesn’t have a phone. The group extended its appreciation to Immanuel Church for making a room available for the center. Lovejoy is renting the room from Immanuel. For more information, phone the Lovejoy office in Grants Pass at (541) 474-1193 or visit www.lovejoyhospice.org. burglaries “thinks they rule the town and hang out in Jubilee Park. Among comments during the 45- minute meeting: *We need to apply pressure to the city council and sheriff’s office to pro- tect our businesses. *Because it’s getting more difficult to stay in business in the city, includ- ing losses due to vandal- ism and burglaries, the city could become a ghost town as people get discouraged and leave. *There are kids ma- rauding through town in the dark hours, tearing down street signs, destroy- ing planters and causing general havoc for busi- nesses. *Parents need to be responsible for their chil- dren. *It seems that some of these bad kids are doing it because they are unsuper- vised and because they get a thrill out of stealing. *We need to confront these kids and let them Little Lambs Preschool Bridgeview Community Church Now taking enrollment for September For more information phone 592-3923 5181 Holland Loop Cave Junction to be the ugly stepchild, not getting what we de- serve and pay for. *These kids are start- ing to run the town. *We love this town and want to stay here, but need police protection. *Hopefully, some 14- year-old isn’t going to get smoked breaking into a business.
