Bobbi Winters, CPA, Brenda Pat- ton, tax consultant, James H. Smith, attorney, and Cheryl Dyer, financial planner, will be on hand to answer ques- tions. NIGHT OUT - A Valentine’s dinner and dance to bene- fit the Dome School will be held Friday, Feb. 14 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at 9367 Takilma Rd. The cost is $30 per couple. Reservations are required. The dance, which begins at 8:30 p.m., is $8 per person and $15 per couple. The Southern Oregon Blues Band will play at the alcohol-free event. Phone 592-3911 for more information. TOWN TALK - A town meeting will be held in the for- mer Selma Elementary School gym on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. Special guest speaker T. Lund will introduce the re- cipient of the S.T.A.R., Students Taking Awesome Respon- sibility, award. The I.V. Fire District, Josephine County Sheriff Dave Daniel, Sgt. and S.T.A.R. Coordinator Ken Selig, representatives from the Oregon Dept. of Forestry and Siskiyou National Forest, and Three Rivers School District board member Dave Toler will be present. FINISH LINE - The 38th Annual World Championship Crab Races will be held on Sunday, Feb. 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds in Crescent City. Dungeness Crabs will be coaxed by human jockeys in an effort to take home the trophy for the “World’s Fastest Crab.” The races will also feature a crab feed. MEMORIAL SERVICE - The Grants Pass Post 28 will conduct “The Four Chaplains Memorial Service,” on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. at the Grants Pass High School multipurpose room. Jewish Rabbi, Lt. Alexander Good, Ro- man Catholic Priest, Lt. John Washington, Methodist Minis- ter, Lt. George Fox and Dutch Reform Minister, Lt. Clark Poling were aboard the U.S. Army Transport Dorchester when it was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. The men gave up their life jackets to save the lives of others. EQUINE EDUCATION - Learn about equine health issues at a workshop on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the OSU Extension Auditorium, 215 Ringuette St. in Grants Pass. To register, phone 476-6613. General admis- sion is $15, and $8 for students and seniors. BEAUTIFUL DOWNTOWN SELMA - In a blink of an eye, downtown Selma could disappear in 1948, but it did offer some services. The Selma Café, operated by Thelma and Harold Lundquist, and stood approximately where the Texaco diesel pumps are now, offered weary travelers a bite to eat as they gassed up at Ivan Burr’s Signal Gas Station/Selma General Store next door. (Photo courtesy of Ted Glidden) Search & Rescue recruiting advisers for SAR Explorers Explorer adult advisers are needed for youth volun- teers 14 to 20 in the Josephine County Search And Rescue (SAR) unit, said Deputy Jill Burrows-Berge, of JoCo Sher- iff’s Office. Advisers help mentor, train and support the sheriff’s SAR Explorers. They partici- pate in SAR missions, training and community events. Prospective advisers must pass a criminal background check and a Boy Scouts of America application process. Adults are needed to help transport youth to and from missions and training, assist in administration, and help plan and facilitate fund-raising and training. No previous SAR experi- ence is necessary, said Bur- rows-Berge. Volunteers are needed on a weekly basis and on an “as available” or “as-needed” ba- sis. Senior citizens, military personnel, emergency medi- cal, law enforcement, fire/ rescue, business owners and professionals can participate. Illinois Valley Garden Club The annual potluck dinner for family and friends of the Illinois Valley Garden Club (IVGC) will be Friday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellow- ship Room of Immanuel United Methodist Church, 200 W. Watkins St in Cave Junc- tion. This year’s program is of interest to anyone who loves the native flora of Oregon. It is the first showing of wild- flower slides of the Denzel Earl Atkinson collection of “Wildflowers of Oregon,” donated to IVGC by her daughter, Dorothy Madison who will be an honored guest at the meeting. Narration will be done by Kathy Lombardo, who is an expert on the subject. If she is well enough, Kay Novak, Siskiyou District Wildflower Chairman will be present. The meeting is open to anyone.
