Vergteeg Sr., MD, 86, of Cave Junction died on Monday, Dec. 23, 2002 in Medford. A private service will be held, with Hull & Hull Fu- neral Directors of Grants Pass in charge of arrangements. He graduated from Willamette University and the University of Oregon Medical School (now Oregon Science Health University). During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. Dr. Versteeg moved in 1948 to Illinois Valley, where he opened his medical office and practiced in the area for more than 40 years. For many of those years he was the only physician and surgeon in the valley. Survivors include his wife Helen; three sons, Charles Jr., Ronald, and Maurice; and two daughters, Linda and Sara. Firm lauded for cigarette plans Oregon Attorney General Hardy Myers and the chief law enforcement officers of 42 other states, the District of Columbia and two U.S. terri- tories announced that Exxon Mobil Corp. (ExxonMobil) voluntarily has agreed to im- plement major new policies to reduce the sale of tobacco products to minors. An Assurance was filed by the Dept. of Justice in Marion County Circuit Court. “This agreement is a criti- cal step forward in the effort to curb tobacco sales to under- age Oregonians,” Myers said. “ExxonMobil’s new policy, which includes enhanced em- ployee training, elimination of self-service tobacco displays and corporate monitoring of franchisees, is a model to which all responsible retailers should aspire.” Carl L. Owen, 79, of O’Brien, died on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002 in a Grants Pass nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Illinois Valley Funeral Home in Cave Junc- tion. ‘Larry’ Berg is open Saturdays: Former Cave Junction resident, Lawrence C. “Larry Berg, 78, of Windsor, Calif., entered into rest on Dec. 4, 2002 in Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Beloved husband of 55 years to Elveva “Ellie” Berg, of Windsor. Adored father and father-in-law of Carole and Larry Silva, of Santa Rosa, and Marcia and Bruce Baswell of Windsor. Admired grand- father of five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He also was survived by nu- merous nieces and nephews. Born in Yakima, Wash. on Dec. 16, 1923. The family moved to Pasadena in 1939, where Larry played the trum- pet with the “Tournament of Roses Band” while attending Pasadena City College. Larry served his country in the U.S. Navy for four years as a bugle master on aircraft carriers during World War II in the Atlantic and Pa- cific oceans. Larry was an electrical contractor in Sonoma County for 15 years. Having to retire due to health, he moved with his wife to Cave Junction in 1977. They resided in Cave Junction for 23 years in the home they built called “Berg’s Nest.” Larry was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. A loyal friend to many. He loved art and music and was a skilled craftsman. To be closer and enjoy family they moved back to California, and have resided in the Windsor Mobile Country Club since 2001.
