Two coaches also are Tribal members – Brandon Case and Justin Mason Trio combines basket weaving, silkscreen techniques in arts creativity camp Three Siletz Tribal members – Jerome Viles, Terrell Casey and Sophia Smith (photo above) – took part in A. Susana Santos’ Journeys in Creativity Art Camp at the Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, Ore., on June 17-30. The theme for 2017 was Weaving Images: Basketry and Silkscreen for Indig- enous Teens. Viles, from Eugene, Ore., served as a mentor. Both Casey, 17, from Beaverton, Ore., and Smith, 15, from Portland, were participants. This was Casey’s third year in the program (pictured below with his art camp creations). Additional people who led the program included Shirod Younker (Coquille), Journeys program manager; Pat Courtney-Gold (Wasco/Tlingit), master basket weaver; Kaila Farrell-Smith (Klamath/Modoc), who helped with gallery techniques and setup; Tony Johnson (Chinook), indigenous aesthetics teacher; and Jessica Hickey, who taught silkscreen prints and provided a place for basket weaving. Casey’s parents are Ticey Mason and Quincy Casey. His grandmother is Pamela Rilatos and his great-grandma is the late Madge Mason. Smith’s parents are Theresa and James Smith. Her paternal grandparents are Gerald Smith and Gloria Culbertson; and her maternal grandparents are Daniel Bostrom and Debra Voutrin.
