Surf City returns with cars, SoundOff The 16 th Annual Surf City Classic Car Show is set for Sept. 3 at Chinook Winds Casino Resort. It’ll have everything from vintage to hot rods and custom cars and trucks to Corvettes. Surf City offers great vendors for food and car-related items, live bands and a tasty beer garden in the parking area of the casino. There is no charge for admis- sion to attend this family-friendly event. We’ll have vehicle classes for every- one, including Best in Show; People’s Choice; Distance Traveled; Muscle Car; Chinook Winds Choice; Classic Car Pre ’89, ’69, ’49; Best Classic Truck Pre ’89, ’69, ’49; Best Corvette; Best Chevy; Best Mopar; Best Ford; Import; Low Rider/ Mini Truck; and You are Special. Registration for either the Surf City car show or Surf City SoundOff is only $10 and includes a T-shirt and $5 in free slot play. All registration proceeds support Angels Anonymous, a local non-profit organization created to assist local resi- dents with basic, immediate needs. Now in its fifth year, the SoundOff competition not only will award the loudest car audio com- petitors, but also the best sound quality. Most competitors take part in local contests all over the country to accrue points toward national-level competi- tion. Each year, the top vehicles in each class are invited to participate at the dB Drag Racing World Finals. Our Surf City SoundOff winners get triple points toward an invitation to this prestigious event. This year, more prizes than ever will be raffled off to benefit Angels Anonymous. In 2013, nearly $2,000 was raised and this year with the amps, weekend getaways and sound systems in the raffle, the hope is for even more money for this local charity. I am 10 years old and I live in the Salem area. As a member of the community, I decided that we could maybe change the Siletz Culture Camp shirt. With the same design in the shirts for the last few years, I think it’s time to make some changes with T-shirts. For the front: What I am imagining is a medicine wheel to represent health and nine feathers hanging to show the nine federally recognized Tribes in Oregon. For the back: I was thinking maybe our Tribe seal and around it (the seal) for it to say “Confederated Tribes Of Siletz.” What do you think? Natasha Gallardo Fellow Tribal members My views on the Elders float and Elders raffle … First, let me give thanks to the numerous volunteers who so generously gave of their time and effort! I have worked in the Elders raffle booth a few years, but only a couple of years observing and lending a little help with the floats. The more I am involved, the more I have come to appreciate those people who show up to make things go as smoothly as possible. I know it is the “Elders float” and it is mostly Elders who work on it, but there are also quite a few non-elders who do a great deal for the Elders. If I am remiss in naming all of the people who helped, please forgive me by realizing that I am space-limited and just a crazy old man! Elders Float Angels: Kay Steele, Shirley Walker, Ed Ben Jr., Gerald Ben, Ray and Pam Ben, Charlie Ben, Mary Ellen Ben, Heather Walker, Sandi Steele, Carol Blomstrom and Float Overseer Master Ed Ben Sr. Elders Raffle Team: Liz John, Kay Steele, Lydia Kentta, Cookie Fernandez, Elaine Cordts and a special “thank you” to Cecelia and her family for all their help. As Anita was at our Elders meeting, she assured us that plans are being made to have a proper Elders raffle booth constructed by next year. I was fortunate to talk to Buddy Lane; he listened to a few of my suggestions and said he would work on it. Thank you also to Chinook Winds Casino Resort and the Siletz Tribal Council for your support of the pow-wow. Some things I suggest to run the Elders booth smoothly, safely, comfortably and perhaps more profitably for the Elders: the new shelter, with some kind of flooring, be it rubber, wood or cement. It should have 8 feet of head room and 8 feet between the two cabinet sides. A manual cash register or some other way to easily record the money exchanges. The Elders coordinator should have three keys for the locks in the Elders raffle booth – one for themselves and one each for two of the volunteers who can show up early.
