This year’s event is scheduled for Sept. 14-18. The annual Celebration of Honor includes the Field of Honor, with 1,000 flags overlooking the ocean; the Oregon Memorial Wall; and vendors on site to offer information to veterans and their families. This year, the Spirit of 45 organiza- tion joins in with the World War II Wall of Honor. It is collecting WWII photos of veterans “who inspired and laid the foundation for the world we live in today.” On Sept. 15, veterans and active duty personnel eat free during open hours at the Siletz Bay Buffet. Veterans and active duty personnel must stop by the Winners Circle to register and show proof of mili- tary service (DD-214 or other military ID) to receive this benefit. Only one free voucher per person. The free comedy show is back this year on Sept. 15 with comedian Don Barnhart and Jeff Capri. Just show proof of military service for two free tickets. On Sept. 17, the Oregon Coast Veter- ans Association hosts a benefit golf tour- nament at Chinook Winds Golf Resort. The Run for Honor 5K and walk will take place Sept. 18. Many veterans services have joined the event this year to provide services and information to veterans and their families. Among the confirmed attendees are My Healthy Vet, Vet Center (readjustment counseling service), Vets Helping Vets HQ, Veterans Benefits Administration, Northwest Battle Buddies, Umpqua Val- ley Chapter 905 (agent orange), Westcare Tillamook CRV Advocate, PTSD Founda- tion (Portland), Lincoln County Veterans Services and Oregon Spirit of 45. This tribute to our service men and women begins with a soft opening on Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. with the Oregon Traveling Tribute Wall and American Infantry Soldier Camp on display and available for viewing. Opening ceremonies at the Field of Honor, in the open field behind Chinook Winds, take place Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. The Oregon Veterans Medal Presenta- tion Ceremonies take place at 2 p.m. on Sept. 16 and 5 p.m. on Sept. 17 on the Field of Honor just behind the casino. Many friends and family members of ser- vice men and women killed in action will post flags on behalf of their fallen heroes at the beginning of the medal ceremony. The Oregon Veterans Medal is a custom-designed medal that signifies Oregon’s appreciation for the service and sacrifice of veterans. To qualify for this medal, an application form must be com- pleted in advance with proof of military service attached. Forms are available at the Field of Honor, starting at noon on Sept. 14. On Sept. 18, the rededication of the Desert Storm Memorial takes place in front of the casino at 2 p.m. The Siletz Tribal Honor Guard and Tribal drummers will start the dedication. State Rep. David Gomberg is the keynote speaker. Your casual stroll on the beach could provide a hidden treasure in the form of a red, white or blue glass float that was carefully placed among the miles of sand, shells and driftwood by Lincoln City Visitor and Convention Bureau volunteers. This treasure-discovering promotion is part of the critically acclaimed “Finders Keepers” community program. Whether it’s a big event or a small fundraiser – every effort contributes to make the 13 th Celebration of Honor more meaningful and personal.
