Siletz job fair connects employers, workers as summer season kicks off By Andrew Johanson, Salem Office Vocational Rehabilitation Aide On June 15, the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians held its second annual job fair, this time in Salem, Ore., at the Tribe’s Hee Hee Illahee RV Resort. The job fair was a partnership between the Siletz 477 Self-Sufficiency Program and the Siletz Vocational Rehabilitation Pro gram, sponsored by the Oregon Depart ment of Transportation. In attendance were a large number of diverse industries and organizations, such as Comcast, Lowe’s, Walmart, Walgreens and Goodwill. All of these employers currently are hiring and recruiting new employees to kick off the summer season. Also attending were local American Indian organizations, including NAYA (Native Youth and Family Association), Grand Ronde, Chinook Winds Casino Resort and Chemawa Indian School, all with excellent resources and job opportunities. “I was able to make a connection with one employer who was hiring for customer service and I think I may have an interview,” said Janell Stuckey from Salem. She added that the Siletz job fair was a great opportunity to mingle with local companies and felt very satisfied with the opportunity to attend. The Siletz Tribe has held two job fairs this year and will host another one in October. Additional information will be provided closer to that time. Hunting and fishing tag rules - What you need to know to follow them The Natural Resources Committee has set the following rules for applying for, obtaining and using Tribal hunting and fishing licenses and tags during the 2011-2012 seasons. These rules implement the require ments of the Tribe’s existing Hunting, Fish ing and Gathering Ordinance. Hunters and fishers should read these rules carefully. As in past years, all those who report filling of their tag will be entered into a drawing for gift certificates to be awarded after the end of the fishing and hunting seasons. If you have any questions about these rules, please contact Tribal Natural Resources Manager Mike Kennedy at 541 -444-8232 or 800-922-1399, ext. 1232. Applying for tag drawings ❖ Applicant must fill out drawing form with his or her own address, phone number, etc. and must personally sign drawing form. Addresses will be verified with Enrollment Department. ❖ Minors must list their hunter safety number on the application (numbers will be verified with ODFW). ❖ Tags will be issued only to the person who is drawn, even if that person intends to have someone else hunt for them. Obtaining Tags ❖ Person wanting tag must come in and fill out tag form with his or her own address, phone number, etc. and must personally sign tag form. Minors must present their hunter safety card when obtaining a hunting tag. Forms and tags will be mailed to those desiring them if they personally call the Natural Resources office and provide the following information: their name, enrollment number, phone number, mailing address and hunter safety card number (if a minor). Each person must call for his or her own tag (cannot call for someone else). Tag will not be valid until he or she signs the form and returns the yellow part of the form to the Natural Resources Department. Tags will not be issued to one person for another person (i.e., spouses, children, relatives, etc.). The person to whom the tag is issued is responsible for reporting if the tag is filled or if it is a deer early archery season tag, returning the tag if it is not filled. Penalties apply if this is not done (see below). Tribal members can obtain only one elk tag in their name during the hunting season (bow, bull and cow tags all count toward the one tag), except that they can obtain additional elk bow tags, if any are available, during the late archery season second distribution in accordance with the rules for that distribution. Using tags Tags can be hunted/fished by the individual obtaining the tag or that individual can give his or her tag to another Siletz Tribal member hunter/ fisher to hunt/fish for them. The other Tribal member must have a valid Tribal hunting/fishing license. Tags cannot be given to a non-Siletz Tribal member. The person to whom the tag is issued is responsible for reporting if the tag is filled or if it is a deer early archery season tag, returning the tag if it is not filled. Tribal members can possess only one Tribal tag in their name at a time for the season they are hunting. If they fill that tag, they can obtain another tag if additional tags are available. Possess ing a Tribal tag does not preclude also' possessing a state-issued tag. All other ODFW rules and regulations regarding hunting seasons, locations, gear, etc. must be followed, including the rules pertaining to disabled hunters (hunter must obtain an Oregon Disabilities Hunting and Fishing Permit from ODFW to hunt as a disabled hunter). Once filled, the tag must be attached to the animal/fish and reported to the Natural Resources Department within three business days. Fishing tags can only be used to fish for salmon at the Tribe’s three fishing sites (Euchre Creek Falls, Dewey Creek Falls, Little Rock Creek [hatcheiy]), using only the following gear - dip net, spear or gaff hook. Fishing can occur only during the two-month Tribally set fishing season (dates will be posted at the Tribal offices and on the Tribe’s website). Reporting ❖ If the tag is filled, the person to whom the tag was issued must report the kill/catch to the Natural Resources Department within three business days. ❖ For early season deer archery tags, if the tag is not filled, the person to whom the tag was issued must return the tag to the Natural Resources Department within 14 days of the end of the season. Penalties Failure to follow the hunting/fishing tag rules or any of the provisions of the Tribe’s Hunting, Fishing and Gather ing Ordinance can result in a Notice of Violation being issued to the violator, with potential penalties including sus pension of hunting/fishing privileges, in accordance with the Hunting, Fishing and Gathering Ordinance. Violations include, but are not limited to, the following: ❖ Failure to return the yellow portion of the tag application to the Natural Resources Department prior to hunting/fishing the tag ❖ Failure to return an unfilled early season deer archery tag within 14 business days of the end of the hunt ❖ FailtTre to report filling a tag within three business days of the kill ❖ Hunting as a disabled hunter without an Oregon Disabilities Hunting and Fishing Permit from ODFW ❖ Failure to abide by all applicable Tribal and ODFW hunting/fishing regulations July 2011 • Siletz News • 23
