TRIBAL MEMBER NEWS Wisdom Teaches Cheerleading, Shares Siletz Heritage in School by Tiffany Wisdom Volunteering as a cheerleading coach (photo above) from September to Decem ber 2008 was a great experience for me. My family moved to Kamiah. Idaho (Nez Perce Reservation), in June. Living in this small community and working for the public schools, I have witnessed the tight budgets. I saw the need for an opportunity for middle school stu dents to cheer at the football games. I was able to teach my skills of cheerleading that I learned in college and high school to excited youth. I plan to have a spring camp to inspire other youth to learn cheerleading and to come out for next year's squad. One important lesson I have learned is that sometimes youth just need someone to show them they care and then they can start caring about themselves. Throughout November, classes across the Mountain View School District were learning about American Indians, pilgrims and Thanksgiving. I was able to present on the Siletz people and pow-wow culture (right photo) to seven classes at Clearwa ter Valley Elementary School. I recently was hired at CVE for the technology lab position. I work part time there to oversee the Waterford Early Read ing Program for kindergarten through sec ond grade on the computer. I also advise the school on new technology curriculum and work as a substitute teacher in the afternoons when needed. In the presentations. I was able to show the regalia worn and related stories. I used the Siletz website to share pictures of family and Tribal member photos. u = Growing up, I helped my mother with hundreds of presentations in Kansas City about the Siletz people. I watched her present on Siletz baskets and speak on our regalia. I danced and sang for many students and groups in KC. I am thankful to my mother. He played for the Taft Tigers as a middle linebacker on defense and a fullback on offense. This was Micah's third year in his division; his experience and leadership were an asset to his team. Micah is the son of Kelly and Ronell Grant of Lincoln City and the grandson and great-grandson of Shannon and Elou- ise Case of Siletz. Micah Grant 10 • Siletz News • January 2009 Screamin' Eagle Racing Team Racing Team Says Thanks by Darrin, Mandi and Kylee Mae Smith Screamin' Eagle Racing would like to thank everyone who has supported us and helped us throughout our 2008 race season. It means a lot to us. We don t only race because it s a blast to do, but it’s in memory of Bobby Bayya and to represent our hometown of Siletz. The team managed to bring home 22 trophies this year, with Lincoln County being our biggest sweep. Darrin and I would like to thank the race team for being such great friends and always being there when someone is in need of help, no matter if it's our team, someone else's or someone in the community. We always seem to come together to help. Bobby would be very proud. Special thanks to Karen Bayya. Bristo and Kristi Bayya and Sammy Bayya — you are all very special people and thank you for welcoming us into your family. Now let's get ready for the 2009 race season!
