TRIBAL MEMBER NEWS Water of Life ~ Native Creations New Shop Space Opens in Siletz The switch to digital television (DTV) is coming. hy Lisa Brown Owned and operated by Lisa Brown, Water of Life ~ Native Cre ations is intended as a warm and wel coming place for Native and non-Native alike to share knowledge through bead ing, teaching and conversation. The construction of the shop has been a lengthy process, with many vol unteer hours and challenges. Such is the way life happens, and it’s the basis of why I became certified as a preven tion specialist and created this “busi ness” or gathering space. The shop will continue to share about other artists’ creations, in addi tion to Native and other cultural teach ings, as well as providing for purchase the tools and materials for creating jew elry and regalia. Located in Siletz, at 126 Molalla St., the shop utilizes specialty beading and craft kits as teaching tools to share knowledge about Tribal culture and wellness, plus supplies to meet cultural and contemporary beading needs. A memorable one for me is a journey to a pow-wow at South Umpqua Falls in Douglas County, when three young girls (ages 10-12) came to my booth. The girls had a lim ited budget. I helped them learn how to create necklaces for little or nothing. Soon they were back and once again efforts were made to create with little or noth ing. Not too much later, they were back again, this time with twenty dollar bills! It wasn’t too long before they had purchased their own tools (at the 30 percent co-op discount) and were very happy about all the jewelry they were selling in their camp. At the end of the event, the girls returned while I was packing to drive back to Siletz. They asked, “Are you going to be here again next year?” (As this was before gas got so expensive) I said, “Yes, I believe that I plan to be here again.” They smiled and exclaimed, “Oh, good! We’re going to have a booth right next to you next year!” This is just one of the stories that make spirits soar. I'm always telling folks, “I am a teacher and I’m trying to put myself out of a job. There are so many young adults who I taught as youth and I am always happy, if not a little tired, to try to teach another. My gift of teaching is not limited to adults. I have traveled to elder care facilities and have had much success in teaching some simple projects to elders who thought them too complex. But after their suc cess the comments were priceless.” Life is full of challenges, especially today. It’s the little memories that will give us comfort and joy when we are most in need. In regards to my expertise in applique beading technique, I give im mense gratitude to my teachers, Jeanne Boardman-Bard and my sister, Bonnie Petersen, just to name a few. As for re galia, there are so many who have helped and shared, too many to name in a brief article. The gifts received from those who have been present at cultural gather ings is a never-ending endeavor. It's the message of the elders and spiritual teachers that what I have learned is a way to help with healing and unity. My passion is for peace and heal ing and joy. I use beading and cultural creativity as a process to help others find their path to a place where they can feel empowered and valued.
