Fish Martinez Reaches Out
to Local Youth

When you first meet Siletz Tribal
member Fish Martinez, you get the feel­
ing that you already know him. He
makes you feel comfortable with his
charming smile and disarming nature.
He looks at you with eyes that at once
welcome you and yet hide great things.
Martinez is reaching out to local
youth through traditional Native drum­
ming. He touched the lives ol young
people through music and education
during weekly after-school classes in
Toledo this last school year. He teaches
respect by giving it.
Martinez is an instructor with the
Lincoln County School District's Na­
tive American Education Program un­
der the title of coordinator and a gradu­
ate of Toledo High School.
“I got started by contracting with
the 21st Century After-School Program
as part of an outreach to Native Ameri­
can students,” said Martinez. “I meet
with students and help them practice
their culture.”
Some of the classes were held at
the Toledo Community Learning Cen­
ter, one of four 21s’ Century learning
sites established by federal grant fund­
ing. The grant is managed by the Lin­
coln County School District.
He explained that the outreach pro­
gram is just getting started.
“This is my first year." said
Martinez. “1 started in October of 2007."
Martinez worked with Toledo Af­
ter-School Program Site Coordinator
Kate Boyes to teach culture classes to
interested students. Martinez spent
mornings at Toledo Elementary School
and afternoons at Toledo Junior and
Senior High Schools.
“From that experience 1 was asked
to do a classroom presentation as part
of a music and movement program."
said Martinez. “I was infusing music
and movement into the presentation. I
put together a drum group with students
and parents and we drummed and sang.
1 really like working with kids and
Native kids in general."
Martinez said he tries to get
everyone involved in his classroom
presentations.
“We try to make it fun and we have
a lot of crowd interactions," said Martinez.
“This is a nice way to bring our com­
munity together. 1 try to bring culture
to academics. It is good tor the students. ’

Siletz Tribe Renews Sponsorship with Salem-Keizer Volcanoes

The Confederated Tribes of Siletz
Indians has renewed its sponsorship deal
with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes lor the
2(X)8 Northwest League Baseball season.
Once again this season. Tribal fami­
lies will be able to attend games at Vol­
canoes Stadium in Keizer with family
members free of cost as a provision of

two-time defending Northwest League
Champion Volcanoes and the Siletz Iribe.
Tribal leadership is happy that
families will again have the opportu­
nity to take their children to healthy,
positive activities.
“The Confederated Tribes of Siletz
is very happy to again this year have
the opportunity to be a major sponsor
of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes base­
ball team.” said Tribal General Man­
ager Brenda Bremner.
Team owner Jerry Walker is happy
to see the relationship between the
Tribe and the team be an ongoing one.
“We are very pleased to continue
our relationship with the Confederated
Tribes of Siletz Indians." said Walker.
Walker said it's a shared belief sys­
tem that makes the relationship work.
