PASSAGES Thank you. Rose, for being my information center for all the who, where and when since we moved to Siletz. Also, thank you and Brenda for all the food, flowers and comfort when we lost our son John. You'll never know how much it meant to Bill and I. We even had a tew laughs before you left. With love, the Ben family Happy wtD Adversary, Creating Healthy Spaces for Us All For more than 37 years, the Native American Rehabilitation Association of the Northwest (NARA NW) has worked to provide American Indians and Alaska Natives in the Portland area with information and support to live healthy lives. In keeping with our mission and to create healthy spaces for our clients, on May I, 2008, NARA NW implemented a new tobacco policy prohibiting the use of commercial tobacco indoors and within 25 feet of windows, doors, ramps and air intakes. This new policy applies to all employees, clients and visitors and all NARA NW facilities. The only exception to this policy is a designated smoking area at the residential treatment facility. To ensure that this new policy is implemented smoothly, NARA NW will educate staff and clients on the differences between commercial tobacco use and traditional tobacco use, integrate tobacco cessation programs in treatment plans and continue to offer opportunities to engage in traditional tobacco ceremonies. Commercial tobacco use is addictive and harmful, and is the leading cause of illness and death in Oregon. American Indians and Alaska Natives have higher rates of commercial tobacco use than any other racial or ethnic group in Oregon - 38 percent compared to 19 percent of the general population. We can change this, together. When we reduce commercial tobacco use and its impacts, we will all be healthier. The new policy on tobacco use is consistent with our mission to provide education as well as physical and mental health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. With this policy, we can better support our clients and their health decisions while continuing to honor the spiritual use of traditional tobacco.
