TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Suicide Prevention Topic of CEDARR Meeting by Natasha A. Kavanaugh Jason Yarmer, project coordinator for the Native Youth Suicide Preven tion Project at the Native American Rehabilitation Association of the North west (NARA NW), was the focus of May’s CEDARR meeting. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration awarded a grant to NARA NW, which is in turn passing it through to Oregon Tribes addressing youth suicide pre vention. The project serves nine sov ereign Tribes/Tribal confederations in Oregon. It also provides technical assis tance and training to American Indian and Alaskan Native (AI/AN) students at Portland State University through PSU's community-oriented student organization, United Indian Students in Higher Education. The overall project goal is to promote critical protective factors to reduce and/or eliminate youth suicide in AI/AN communities throughout Oregon. CEDARR attendees discussed the empowerment of being part of suicide prevention/intervention because you know that what you are doing can pos sibly save a life. Lourdes Jackson of the Siletz Val ley Early College Academy (SVECA) touched on the school’s approach to suicide prevention. Following through with a safety plan is critical. You arc making a commit ment between the two of you to keep that commitment. Several members of the Siletz Tribe and community will participate in an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). This is a two-day, highly interactive, practical, practice- oriented workshop for individuals who want to feel more comfortable, confi dent and competent in helping to pre vent the immediate risk of suicide. A few benefits of this training in clude bringing suicide awareness to our community, learning suicide alert- ness/intervention skills, exploring how to create suicide-safer connections within our community, upgrading skills for working with persons at risk of suicide after the initial suicide crisis and becoming a trainer or sponsor or Elaine Jackson signs in at the CEDARR meeting, (photo by Natasha Kavanaugh) organizing a training for trainers.
