Elder’s Honor Day Brings Living Treasures Together by Brent Merrill The Siletz Tribe played host to a large group of the nation's most pre cious resources on Elder's Honor Day in Lincoln City on April I. Chinook Winds Casino Resort was the site of the annual gathering of living treasures - our Elders. Tribal leaders have set aside Elder's Honor Day as a way to show the mem bership the appreciation of those who have walked the path before us. This year's gathering was one of the largest ever and filled the banquet room with Elders and their families. “We take great pride in our Elder's Honor Day event.” said Tribal Chair man Delores Pigsley. “This year's cel ebration was one of the largest.” Tribal Elders and leaders and their families came to western Oregon from all over the Northwest. Families were reunited at the event, even if just for a short time. “There is nothing that I enjoy more than sitting around a table and listening to our old folks talk about the good old days” said Tribal Council member Loraine Butler. “I believe that their memories, stories and knowledge are priceless.” Butler said the event is about pay ing respect. “It is my opinion that the Elder's Honor Day is a wonderful way to show our Elders they are appreciated and loved by our membership.” said But ler. “They are the keepers of our old ways and I hope we will always rec ognize and acknowledge their accom plishments. They are the teachers of our culture, our language, our parenting ...” Many Tribal programs that deal di rectly with the Tribe's Elder population were represented at the event. Guest speakers talked about health and exer cise and memory tests. Information about Elder finances was available and vendors showcased the best in Tribal arts and crafts while people gathered in small groups to talk and catch up with each other. Laughter could be heard throughout the room and bal loons bobbed from the backs of chairs. "What a great day for the Elders.” said Tribal member and Tribal General Manager Brenda Bremner. “They had an opportunity to share some Siletz Tribal hospitality with their fellow El ders from neighboring Tribes - many of whom the Siletz Elders have known for many years. It was a great way to enjoy a day. reminiscing with old and new friends about years gone by.” Chairman Pigsley said the credit for the event goes directly to the Tribal Elders who put the event together. “Our Elders welcome Tribal people from all over the Northwest,” said Pigsley. "They do a great job of plan- ning and organizing the event. Thanks go to our Elders who make this happen.” Spending the day laughing and talking with the Tribe's living treasures is healing. Their experiences often leave us with simple messages. “Our children are our future." said Butler. "Our Elders are the keepers of the past.” Nesika lllahee Pow-Wow Attention Pow- Wow Campers Campers for this year's Nesika lllahee Pow-Wow are taken on a first- come, first-served basis. The dates of our pow-wow are Aug. 8-10. There will be a $15 garbage charge per campsite, with one vehicle per campsite. If you have additional ve hicles or are unable to park your ve hicle at your campsite, you will need to park at one of our parking lots off of the pow-wow grounds. Please keep pets off of the pow wow grounds and on a leash at all times. Camper registration forms and fees will be collected on-site.
