CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
We’ve survived several months of
national politics - not only between,
but within the major political parties.
Super Tuesday has come and gone and
now all of us will watch intently what
happens in the months ahead.
In the end, we’ll be involved in
voting for the candidates who we be­
lieve will best serve us and the coun­
try. But before that happens, we will
still have months of political contro­
versy to endure and for us to evaluate
the candidates. Your vote in the primary
as well as the general election is ex­
tremely important.
Meanwhile, our tribe has already
just survived another tribal election -
in fact, 30 years of them. But when we
think about those 30 years, we must ad­
mit our Constitution has served us well.
We do have members, however,
who believe our system needs to be
changed so the general membership
can elect people whom they really want
and trust. Under our present system, our

members already have the opportunity
to do that, to turn the entire council over
within three years, but it’s never hap­
pened. The fact is, our system allows
Bud Lane has been elected again
to serve as vice chairman and Jessie
Davis as treasurer. Once again. I have
been elected chairman, a position I
pledge I will carry out with diligence
and honor.
Tribal Physical
Fitness Programs
On a tribal level. I am happy about
and proud of the tribe’s development
of our physical fitness programs. Our
new Tillicum Fitness Center, paid for
with diabetes fund grants, just opened
with many exercise machines and a
person who works there full time.
The foundation is almost complete
for the construction of our new gym­
nasium, a sprung structure scheduled
to be up and open by April I. These
new facilities are badly needed in Siletz
for every age group, and are the be­
ginning of our effort to develop a
strong and healthy membership.

Athabaskan Language class started for beginners in January 2008. These
classes began with basic instruction and will progress over the next year. It
also will be a refresher course for those more-advanced students. Come and
join other members of your community and tribe in learning to speak one
of our ancient languages.

it and there is nothing to prevent it from
happening sometime down the road.
Between now and the time the gen­
eral election comes along, I will try to
keep you abreast of Indian issues, in par­
ticular, what position the political par­
ties and candidates are taking regarding
Indian rights, programs and funding.
Before concluding my comments
about elections, I want to express my
thanks to all tribal members who par­
ticipated in the recent tribal election. It's
not only because we have a living Con­
stitution, but also because we have a
significant number of tribal members
who take an active part in the electoral
process that we have a viable government.
I congratulate Robert Kentta and
Loraine Butler for being re-elected to the
council. Tina Retasket not only was
elected to council, but also as secretary to
the council. As you know, Tina has served
as assistant general manager of the tribe
and now, with that background, will be
able to make important contributions
to the deliberations of the council.
