TRIBAL PROGRAMS NEWS 477-Self-Sufficiency Program Update by De Anna Pearl hv ¡Vinona Butler In June 2006. I graduated with hon ors from Portland Slate University with majors in social science and business administration - human resource man agement. My minor was women's studies. After graduation, I began searching for employment in the human resource field and unfortunately, I found myself not qualified because ol the lack of on- the-job experience required. In April 2007. I applied for the Work Experience Program through the Siletz Tribe, yet 1 had no idea how to find an opportunity in the human resource field. The tribal service specialist found a position with the State of Oregon in the Human Resource Management Division. I was placed then as an office spe cialist II in the Labor Relations Unit, which handles employee grievances and union contracts. Three weeks later, I was moved to the executive assistant of the state's administrator for Human Resource Service Division. This posi tion has given me exposure to all aspects of the human resource func tions, including policies, procedures, classification, compensation, training, development, HRIS systems, and per sonnel processes. I am confident this work experi ence placement will enhance my op- Run to the Rogue Youth Team Winona Butler portunities in the HR field and make me more employable than I was prior to this experience. Thank you for your support in reaching my career goals. We here al the Salem Area office would like to congratulate Winona on her continued success through her work experience. She has received excellent ratings in her work experience. Winona also has recently entered into a WEX extension to help her gain the job training needed to seek employ ment in the field for which she attended college. The job training has given Winona more experience that she can add to her resume. We at the Salem office would like to say thank you to Cassandra. Jen nifer, Madeline, and their children for attending this special day and event. Sharmon Cook- Wright, Tribal Service Specialist 10 * Siletz News • November 2007 What this year’s Run to the Rogue event meant to us - Doing our part in supporting our community efforts. Par- ticipating in a positive way and having fun. The youth team ran (counting individual partici pants) 182 miles down the coast. Comments about this year’s run: Culture staff were organized and good food as al ways. Thanks for the Guide & Points of Interest. Yes, we read it out loud many times to the kids. The Youth Team was amaz ing. They ran, played and helped all along the way. It was an ex treme pleasure helping these youth participate. We camped for four days and every day each youth helped set up and tear down camp. They helped serve food to elders and cleaned up afterwards. Our drive home on Sunday was fun too! We stopped at historical points of interest provided by the Culture Department. I would like to thank Angela Mar tin and Rachelle Endres for their efforts in getting us equipment and a van to travel. I loved driving that big white van. Thank you Ardella Parr for helping keep us organized and kids moving. Finally, thank you Delina John for keeping us on schedule, signing up for miles and overall keeping a positive attitude when the nights went long. It has been a long time since 1 laughed so hard and felt so proud of a group of kids. Avery Perkins carries the eagle staff during Run to the Rogue.
