It has been a pleasure working with our Housing Youth throughout this year. These youth have made efforts to make their community a better place by working hard at elder woodcuts and elder assistance day, updating the hous ing bus shelters, and river cleanup. We thank Jim Kikumoto for donat ing buffet tickets for our well-deserving youth. Pictured above from left to right are Chloie Oliphant, Alexis Metcalf, Christine Perkins, Jonathan Benedict, Joshua Rilatos, Avery Perkins, Jeffrey Sweet, “Mini Elvis,” and Chris Garza. Future youth activities will be in combination with tribal departments administering funds for youth. This will make it possible to expand activities to all Siletz-area youth and special ac tivities for tribal youth living within our 1 1-county service area. Portland Office 503-238-1512 Clay Arden Anna Renville Hoka Hey! My name is Aleatha (Levi) Simmons, my father is R.E. (Bobby) Simmons, and my mother is Arliss M. Chatterson. I am the current temporary coordinator for the Siletz Youth Center. I’ve been employed in this position since Culture Camp and have initiated seven recreational activities for our youth in that time. The first was a day camp located in Taft called “Native Ameri can Traditions and More,” instructed by Juanita Whitebear and attended by eight of our youth. With the assistance of Housing, Edu cation, and the cooperation of the youth, we spent two afternoons at the Siletz River, one at Moonshine Park, two days of Salmon Camp with the Warm Springs Tribe, then had a billiards tourney. This was followed by Run to the Rogue, for which I had five youth registered. In particular. I would like to thank Felicia Carmona, Mona Fisher, Spen cer Hatch. Ric Leaton, Angela Martin, Justin Mason, and Chuvonne Metcalf for their assistance and support. I enjoy this position as it gives me the oppor tunity to interact with (and culturally engage with) our upcoming leaders. In October, with the help of my supervisor. Bev Youngman, we will begin a Chinook Jargon linguistics course at the Youth Center. This class, which may be attended by all ages, is planned to be an hour-long class, two times a week. “Linguistics” is more than the language; it’s also the speak ing (pronunciation) of it - which in Chinook is most important - as words are not spelled as they sound. The Youth Services Network has chosen to hold Half-Day Club at the Youth Center, which entails a variety of activities for youth in the afternoons of half school days. Also in October, the Youth Center will host a Pumpkin Carving Contest with three age divisions that is open to everyone. In mid-November, there will be a Solstice (or Prayer) Stick-making class to ready ourselves for winter. The fall hours for the Youth Center are 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Monday- Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Satur day. - Ikt Tillicum - Siletz.
