TRIBAL MEMBER NEWS Run to the Rogue by John "Capt. Caviar " Roe Mason Sideroff, Erica Wilson, and Emma Bonnit Young Horsewoman Needs Funds for Nationals Hi, my name is Erica Wilson. I am 14 years old, a freshman at New Ply mouth High School in New Plymouth, Idaho. This year I enjoyed coming to the cultural camp and learning about my culture. I am giving you a little history. I was adopted at birth by Roy and Penny Wilson. My birth father, Jason Simmons, never knew about me. I found him with the help of my mother, Penny, and found out that 1 am from Siletz heritage. I am happy that 1 got to meet my grandmother, Arliss Chatterson, my Uncle Weston, and my Aunt Levi and part of their family. When I came to Culture Camp, 1 was surprised to meet so many of you and find out who all was related to me. That was everyone, right? Thank you for helping me and letting me know you. I made first place at the Idaho State Horse Judging Contest in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, in the Intermediate Division. This means that my team of three and I get to go to nationals in Fort Worth, Texas, at the Paint Horse Judg ing Contest. I am in hope of any help and sup port that my tribe and family can give me. I am in need of funds, and prayers that 1 learn all my oral lessons by heart and remember all the things my coaches are teaching me at this time. It’s a lot of hard work and I hope to make you all proud. I am enclosing a picture of my team - Mason Sideroff (15) came in 7th; Emma Bennit (15) came in 11th; and myself, Erica Wilson (14), 1st place. The scores combined put us at third place as a team. You are not just helping me, but also my team. I also would like to thank the Siletz Tribal Council, who by my Grandma Arliss’ request, granted me a Siletz Tribal flag to carry during my competitions. Past and present Some see, some don't Some hear, some won't Past and present Drum beats, heart beats Repeats of passion stripped of false pride taking each moment in stride Carlene Delores Easter 1954 - 2007 Carlene Delores Easter was born April 19, 1954, in Newport, Ore., to Walter and Esther Bell Easter. Carlene passed away Aug. 16, 2007, in Eu gene, Ore. She was a mem ber of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and she was appointed lifelong princess for the tribe. The family moved to Springfield, Ore., so Carlene could go to school and she attended Easter Seals, then she transferred to public schools. She also attended Springfield High School and then got her GED from Lane Commu nity College. In 1964, she was the grand marshal for the Christmas parade. Survivors include two brothers, Calvin Easter and Ralph Easter, both of Siletz, Ore.; and two sisters, Caroline Easter of Siletz and Corliss Attebury of Eugene. Carlene also had six nieces and two nephews; three great-great-nieces and three great-great-nephews; two aunts, Clarice McKnight and Sharen Bell of Springfield; and one uncle, Chuck Ricks of Logsden, Ore. A wake was held at the Siletz Tribal Community Center on Aug. 19, fol lowed by a funeral service at the community center and burial at Paul Washington Cemetery on Aug. 20. Musgrove Family Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements. You may make donations to the Easter Seals School or the Shriners Hospital for Children. The family of Carlene Easter would like to take this time to say thank you to everyone who came to see her and pray for Carlene while in the hospital, and we would like you to know how much we appreciate what you did for our family in time of need.
