TRIBAL MEMBER NEWS Rusty Butler and another competitor at the mixed martial arts tournament Butler Qualifies for Championships Congratulations to Rusty Butler, who took first place in his bracket and was awarded second place overall in his weight division in the 2007 Brazil- ian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Wrestling League Tournament held March 3 at Century High School in Hillsboro, Ore. More than 230 competitors partici- pated in the seven-hour event that fea tured 20 mixed martial arts teams. With his awards, Rusty qualifies for the championships to be held in June. He taught me many qualities and gifts in my life. He taught me to shine such a bright colorful rainbow of personalities that touch each person even today. He placed first in the South Lane School District. Your family is very proud of you. Keep up the hard work. 14 • Siletz News • • by Suzanne De Poe-Thompson To be the first woman to ever work a boy's championship game at any state tournament in Washington state history was a great feeling of accomplishment for me. Who said it can't be done? 1 also got the honor to referee the T-Mobile National High School Fed eration tournament held in Seattle this last winter. The game was on national television. I was honored to referee Winter Haven High School from Win ter Haven, Fla., and Collins High School from Suwanee, Ga. It was a great season and I look forward to many more. May 2007 1 was hunting by the lake and then I saw it - a beautiful grey wolf, prowling the wilderness. I could feel the wind and the ground beneath my feet. Its grey fur was thick and the sharp teeth were white as snow and those tremendous big yellow eyes were so beautiful. In the background was the river and the trees. I could smell the fresh air. It howled like the wind. Then it looked at me and I smiled. Then the beautiful wolf walked away with pride.
