March 2007 Written by an anonymous Siletz Tribal elder, submitted by Angela Martin Hear the beat of the drums of long ago beat as one with Mother Earth. The people were there in tune with spirits all. We sang and danced so pure and tall. But to us came another spirit so low it made us forget it all. made us feel even more tall. It was and is called a lying spirit. Given as a gift to soothe the savage in us all. But, the savage was not soothed at all. What arose instead was an evil that made us small. The spirit we came to re sole was not of mother after all. It has caused bickering among our selves, ignoring our spirit to stand tall to remember to respect our women, the caretakers of ceremonies. Our children who observe the broken circle of lessons not taught and continue the vicious cycle. Elders who have done and not done still deserve an amount of respect. This insidious disease has infected many of our way. even those who show a warrior respect. For even as warriors we have tended to show scorn for those less able, thus we also hurt spirit by not hav ing an open heart. To listen and really hear the broken spirit or other hurt spirits. Genera tions have been infected with a lack of understanding of an all-giving love, not only for others but for self. For truly that love is all spirit asks - unconditional love.
