TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Cut Wood for the Elders Day The Natural Resources Committee and Natural Resources Department will sponsor a “Cut Wood for the Elders Day” on April 8. The woodcut will be held at the old log yard at the tribe’s Toledo Mill prop erty. We need lots of volunteers to help cut and split firewood for tribal elders. Bring your chainsaws, hydraulic wtxxJ splitters, splitting mauls, axes, and lots of energy. Even if you don’t have any of those, we can use the moral support! Lunch, drinks, and snacks will be provided. We will meet at the tribal adminis tration building at 8 a.m. and caravan to the mill. For anyone wishing to come later, directions to the mill will be posted on the front door of the building. The goal of this event will be to stockpile firewood for future delivery to elders. We have a long list of elders who burn wood for their winter heat. People willing to haul firewood to elders outside of the Siletz area should contact Elders Coordinator Angela Ramirez at 1-800-922-1399, ext. 1225, or 541-444-8225 and she will pair you up with an elder in need. We especially need folks who can haul wood to the Eugene, Salem, and Portland areas. Previous woodcuts have seen more elders showing up than young folks! This is a challenge to all you “youngsters” (in body and/or spirit) to come out and show your respect for the elders by providing them with the means to keep warm during the cold months. Children and grandchildren of all the elders who rely on wood for their heat need to come to this event. Lightfoot performed at Siletz Valley School in March as part of his Reach The Rez Tour, which will cover 211 reservations, 40 states, and 200,000 miles by the time it’s completed. The 52-week tour started in the fall of 2005 and will finish July 15 in Alaska. April 2006 As you may have heard, the Siletz NARCH research project is conducting a survey to find out about tribal mem ber attitudes and beliefs about culture and substance abuse. This survey was developed specifi cally for the Siletz Tribe. Tribal member participation will help us identify tribal needs and enhance services and programs to improve the health of the Siletz Tribe. We have received approval from Tribal Council for the research project and have received final approval from the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board Internal Review Board and the Indian Health Service. We have applied for our Certificate of Confidentiality from the National In stitutes of Health. This is the last item we need to have in place before con ducting the survey. The NARCH project consists of two phases. In Phase 1, you may be one of the 1,000 randomly selected adult tribal members to receive an invitation to take part in the survey. If you are, you will receive your invitation in April. Please help us learn more about our tribe by completing and returning the consent form enclosed with the invita tion and then completing the survey as Time to Gather The time to gather basket materials is upon us. This is the necessary first step in our basket-making process. Hazel sticks (kvn) generally are ready to pick and peel in the middle of spring. Spruce root (xii-wan-tr’e) is the other main material used in our bas kets. It can be gathered year round. While there is not likely to be any benefit for you per sonally, your contribution, along with all of the other tribal members who take the survey, is likely to have an impact on the Siletz Tribal community. The Phase I survey includes ques tions about your beliefs and activities as well as questions regarding substance use/abuse. As an incentive for participa tion in Phase 1, everyone who completes and returns the survey by the deadline will receive a T-shirt from the project. Each Phase 1 participant will be in vited to volunteer for Phase 2, which con sists of face-to-face or phone interviews, depending on your location. Up to 50 participants will be randomly selected for Phase 2, which will consist of an interview that includes different questions about your beliefs, activities, and substance use/ abuse. Phase 2 participants will be entered in a drawing for additional larger gifts. All information you provide on your survey will be kept confidential. Your data will be combined with other participant responses and used for sta tistical purposes only. Your individual data never will be reported. The research team includes Siletz Tribal members Kelley Ellis and Delina John, and myself as the data coordina tor. I will have the sole responsibility for data collection and entry, and will be the only research team member with access to your data. Since I am a non-tribal member, this assures the strictest confidentiality of the information you provide. I will de stroy all paper copies of the surveys upon completion of the research project.
