TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS S.T.A.N. Classes Offer a Chance to Improve Your Skills If you haven’t participated in a Siletz Tribal Action Network (S.T.A.N.) workshop, you are missing a great opportunity to learn and develop new skills. S.T.A.N. workshops offer a variety of personal development and skill building classes, including Basic Com puter Skills, How To Repair Damaged Credit, and Bookkeeping. Classes are free to Siletz Tribal mem bers, their spouses, and children age 16 and older. Participation in the workshops also is open to Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and Chinook Winds Casino Resort employees. There is a $10 charge per workshop for non-Siletz Tribal members. All S.T.A.N. workshops begin at 6 p.m. and last for approximately two hours. They are held in the Siletz Tribal Business Corporation office, 2120 NW 44,h St., Suite D, in Lincoln City. Pre-registration is required for all S.T.A.N. workshops. To try and accommodate these re quests, we are developing a list of people who would like to participate in daytime classes and the types of classes they would like to take. If there is sufficient interest in hold ing S.T.A.N. daytime workshops, a schedule will be developed. S.T.A.N. workshops are free to Siletz Tribal members, spouses, and children over age 16. If you don’t, you are missing a great opportunity to improve your skills and your ability to compete in today’s world. Each day, the need to effectively use a computer increases. As technol ogy continues to develop, there are very few jobs or businesses that don’t require basic computer knowledge. Although many people may have a computer in their house, many only use it to play games or visit the Internet, while others don’t even know how to turn it on! Elders in particular often seem intimidated by the new technol ogy and see no reason to learn how to use a computer. Other people, however, use a com puter on a daily basis both for work and personal business. But whether you are working or own a business, if you don’t have computer skills your options for employment opportunities and increasing your business are limited. Many banks, utility, and credit card companies prefer that people do their business online. Although many people still refuse to do business this way, their options are becoming limited. So if technology is becoming such an important part of our daily lives, why don’t more people learn how to use a computer? For many, it’s fear of the unknown; for others, it’s something that is unfa miliar and they don’t feel they have the need to know how to use the computer. People who are retired often feel that because they are no longer in the work force, the need to understand and use technology is useless. If you are a person who doesn’t understand technology or how to use a computer, the Siletz Tribal Action Network (S.T.A.N.) is here to help you. Learn to use a computer in a Basic Computer Skills class. Other classes that teach specific computer programs like Word and Excel also are offered. Nesika lllahee Pow-Wow Tribal Royalty Applications Young Siletz Tribal women inter ested in running for one of these cat egories can request an application from Mona Fisher at 1-800-922-1399, ext. 1230, or 541-444-8230. The deadline to turn in applications is June 30, 2006. Contestants are judged on knowl edge of tribal and family history, poise and personality, speaking abilities, dance abilities in both the Feather Dance and intertribal styles, and ticket sales. Each contestant will receive a com mission on the number of tickets she sells. Commission rates are as follows: 200 to 500 at 20 percent, 501 to 1,000 at 25 percent, and 1,001 or more at 30 percent. This year’s royalty will be spon sored to go to the Gathering of Nations Pow-Wow and Miss Siletz also will be sponsored to go to the Miss NCAI competition. The pageant is scheduled for Aug. 10, 2006, and the winners will be crowned before the first grand en try on Aug. I 1. Pow-Wow Logo Contest UnderWay Royalty Crown Proposals Due The Pow-Wow Committee is now soliciting fine artwork for this year’s pow-wow logo. We are looking for original work depicting the cultural/traditional as pects of the tribe or of any American Indian design appropriate for a logo. Please send your work to: The Pow-Wow Committee is ac cepting proposals for the 2006-2007 royalty crowns for Miss Siletz, Jr. Miss Siletz, and Little Miss Siletz. All proposals must have a proposed design, including color scheme, size of crown(s), and total cost. You can sub mit a proposal for as many crowns as you would like. The proposals must be submitted to the committee before April 14, 2006.
