TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Business and You! Attend the S.T.A.N. Workshops by Rosie Sufficool, STBC Business Information Counselor All free workshops are held at the Siletz Tribal Business Corporation, 2120 NW 44th St., Suite D, Lincoln City Business Owners - Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help! New business owners often are over whelmed by all of the responsibilities associated with opening a business. As the owner, you will find that all of the jobs associated with running the business have landed in your lap. Particu larly if it’s a small business, you will be responsible for sales, record keeping, maintenance, cleaning, employees, inven tory control - in reality, everything! Of course there are some things you may be able to do better than others. You might be great at sales or dealing with employees and not very good at record keeping or maintenance. A smart business owner should not be afraid to hire pro fessional help for things he/she doesn’t feel equipped to handle. For example, record keeping is a very important part of business, so hiring an accountant or a bookkeeper may save you a lot of money in the long run. If you don’t understand finances and tax laws, you could end up in trouble with the Internal Revenue Service. If you plan to hire a professional to help you in some part of your business, it’s important to choose someone who will do the job you want done, efficiently and cost effectively. Some things to remember when you are hiring someone to help you with your business are: • • • Check their references. If they don’t have any or don’t want to give you references, don’t hire them! Can you afford their services? If the cost seems too high, shop around until you find someone who is com petent that you can afford. A good way to locate the type of service or professional you need is to ask other business owners. They usually are happy to tell you if they are satisfied with someone’s services or not. You also can check with your local Cham ber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau for possible referrals. Don’t ever give total control of your business to anyone! It doesn't mat ter how good the professionals you might hire are, it’s still important that you know everything they are doing. Hiring professionals to help you with some of your business tasks will allow you more time to devote to the things you do best, which will increase your chances for business success!
