Testing the Water by Angela Ramirez On June 24, 26 elders were up early and ready to catch a bottom fish on the Dockside Charters’ boat Samson that calls Depoe Bay its home port. It was a beautiful sunrise from the dock at 5:30 a.m. when the majority of the elders arrived. They saw the salmon fishing charter set out at 5:30 a.m. It was just a half-hour more until they were sit ting out on the ocean. Then the captain said he was going to go out and check the waters - it was looking a little rough. The captain of the Samson and the captains of the two smaller boats returned with the news that the smaller boats would not be able to go out, so only 20 of the 26 would be able to go out on the Samson. The salmon charter had just returned; 17 of the elders wanted to give it a try, so they boarded and set sail at 6 a.m. sharp. Those who stayed behind watched them depart toward the ocean. Some commented on seeing the whitecaps coming up as they left their motel rooms. One of the vans went up to Highway 101 to watch them head out to sea. They sometimes lost sight of the boat, dipping down as the large waves covered them from view, then popping back up to the top of the wave. One elder commented that all she could see was water and wondered how she was going to cast her line when she couldn't let go of the table to stand up. Some of the men commented that, “It wasn’t that bad.’’ After about 15 minutes out, the cap tain decided that it wouldn’t be possible to fish and returned to port. It was amaz ing to see the captain steer the boat into the narrow path back into the bay. The elders have rescheduled their trip for Aug. 5 and hope to have plenty of sun, low winds, and calm seas!
