PASSAGES CHINOOK WINDS CASINO RESORT Singer/Songwriter Tillis Comes to the Coast Country music legend Mel Tillis comes to Chinook Winds Casino Resort on May 27-28. Tillis started performing in the early ‘50s with a group called The Westerners while serving as a baker in the U.S. Air Force in Okinawa. In 1956. Webb Pierce recorded a song written by Tillis, / 'm Tired, and it launched Tillis' career. Tillis has written more than 1,000 songs and about 600 have been recorded by major artists, including Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town, recorded by Kenny Rogers; Thoughts Of A Fool by George Strait; and Honey (Open That Door) by Ricky Skaggs. He has recorded more than 60 albums himself. He’s had 36 top-10 singles, with nine going to No. 1, including Good Woman Flues, Coca Cola Cowboy, and Mel Tillis Southern Rain. One of Tillis’ recent recordings is Old Dogs, with Bobby Bare, Wayion Jennings, and Jerry Reed, which was released in 1998. Tillis was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters International Hall of Fame in 1976. In 1999, Broadcast Music Inc (BMI) named him the Songwriter of the Decade for two decades. Tillis also received a Special Citation of Achievement from BMI in 2(X) 1 for 3 million broadcast performances of Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town.
