Live Amateur Boxing Returns Chinook Winds Casino Resort pre sents the return of Battle at the Beach - Olympic-sty le amateur boxing - on May 7. Sanctioned by USA Boxing, the national governing body for all amateur boxing in the U.S., this event helps estab lish senior youth boxing records for consideration as Olympic contenders. Tickets to Battle at the Beach are an affordable $ 10 for general admission and $20 for ring side seats. Families will appreciate the Family Four Pack now available for Battle at the Beach events. It includes four general ad mission tickets for $25, for a savings of $15. Tickets to Commotion at the Ocean (professional boxing, coming up June 4) range from $35 to $250. The fight card is set for 10 bouts of three to four rounds, with rounds of one or two min utes each. Pendleton blanket giveaway with 3-lndian Star purchase! 18 Fri 2005 Miss Native American Pacific Northwest Pageant Coming Soon This year’s Miss Native American Pacific Northwest Pageant will take place at 7 p.m. on May 21 at Chinook Winds Casino Resort. There is no admission cost to this all-ages event. Scholarships once again are available to the young ladies competing. New to this year’s competition - American Indian women from Washington and Idaho are invited to participate and this year’s win ner will be sponsored to take part in the Miss NCAI Scholarship Pageant (National Congress of American Indians) next year. Changes to the pageant were in answer to requests of the participants. In the first year (2003), the winner of the pageant, Appolonia Lane of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, was sponsored to par ticipate in the Miss Oregon competition. The next year, the contestants asked that the pageant sponsor them in an event that celebrates American Indian culture, art, and history. The necessary changes were made to the program and the 2004 winner, Rebecca Payne of Portland, a member of the Taniana Athabascan of Alaska, will participate in the 2005 Miss NCAI Scholarship Pageant held later this year in Tulsa, Okla. Another request was to include ladies from tribes throughout the Northwest. The title of the pageant winner was changed from Miss Native American Oregon in the hopes that more young ladies from the region would participate. This change fits very well with the Siletz Tribe’s goal of other tribes hosting future Miss Native American Pacific Northwest pageants. This year’s contestants represent six different tribes and hail from Corvallis, Otis, Portland, and Tigard, Ore., as well as Pullman and Chelan, Wash. In 2004, tribes throughout Oregon contributed $6,500 in scholarships for the pageant. The goal for 2005 is $10,000. Pageant contestants will be judged in five categories: private interview, tribal history essay, traditional regalia, modem attire, and talent. The contestants also at tend workshops on poise, interview skills, and other useful subject areas. Chinook Winds Casino Resort provides these classes at no charge. All contestants are required to com mit to a social issue platform, be 17-23 years old, never married, and enrolled in a college or university or plan to continue their secondary education. The 2005 Miss Native American Pa cific Northwest Pageant is free to the pub lic and open to all ages.
